So fun to chat with McGill about our James Bay polar bear project, it's expansion to five Omushkego Cree communities across the Bay, and new multiyear funding from the Weston Northern Biodiversity Research Program! Partnership and knowledge sharing makes it all possible🐻❄️
James Bay’s polar bears are losing ice habitat. McGill PhD candidate Alexandra Langwieder works with Indigenous communities, blending Cree Knowledge & science to track how climate change impacts polar bears & other sea-ice species. 🔗 Read more: https://t.co/QCQWo0r1mN

Recently, a team of Cree land stewards, researchers, & regional wildlife biologists came together to build a project to gather information about polar bears & populations in James Bay, located at the southernmost edge of the polar bears' range:

Our first polar bear paper from the EMR is out! 🐻❄️In it we share the approach we’ve been taking and how it could be used to expand community-based polar bear research in the North. So proud to work with these co-authors on my first first author paper! https://t.co/GAlYZoF0ij

To snag some polar bear hair, researcher @al_langwieder set up a triangle of barbed wire, surrounding a pile of rocks that were covered in fish juice. As you can see, the bears were fascinated by the trap. Listen here: https://t.co/C4KuqF5b4C

The weather was not kind to us in James Bay this summer but, after 1199 km on the water, we finally finished deploying the hair sampling stations! Very excited to see who's hanging around the islands this year

New paper out in @STOTEN_journal! Mercury concentrations in #polarbear hair in the Norwegian and Russian Arctic are comparatively low and not driven by feeding habits. Takk/thank you/спасибо to all coauthors and @NorskPolar for making this work possible. https://t.co/iRYuhjb2Rz
