And, for western Scotland, Friday is likely to be the warmest day since May. or even the warmest day of the year so far (if 26 or 27C is recorded).

Taking a moment to appreciate how unusual the weather pattern affecting the UK will be this Friday. There's an airmass with up to ~17°C at 850 hPa streaming in from the east (2 m temps beneath easily mid-20s Fri aft.), while relatively cool & unstable air loiters to the S.

The Met Office app / website doesn’t give 0% probabilities, the lowest is <5%. Also, predicting that the world will be warmer in 50 years if we continue to pollute the atmosphere is very different to predicting where showers will develop in two hours time.

Six hours ago @metoffice forecast for rain in my area was 0% probability, from models developed over 50yrs on some of the largest computers. It’s now been raining for 2hrs. Climatologists use same processes & similar models to claim accurate climate predictions in 50yrs time.

3 points. 1. UK’s weather changes day to day, month to month. But sometimes, for months at a time, certain weather patterns can recur again and again. 2. The current persistent low won’t last forever. 3. The world continues to warm, however poor the UK weather is. 2/2.

UK summer so far has been remarkably cold by recent standards. Since the year 2000, only one year was this cold from 1st June to 8th July (2012). In the 1970s, five summers were as cold or colder up to this point (71, 72, 74, 77, 78). In the 1960s, also five (62, 64, 65, 67, 69)

Even in a warming world, there are still some cold spots every month. UK was 0.4C below average in June 2024 with much of Western Europe including Iceland also below average. But globally, it was the warmest June on record and the 13th record-breaking month in a row.

On the latest run, the operational run is hotter than most of the ensembles. Although, they’ve also mostly trended upwards. (This is the temp trend at 5000 feet, not the surface btw) . 2/2

I’m probably in a minority of one here but…. I’ve enjoyed June’s weather so far. Where I live, it’s mostly dry and sunny in a northerly. That’s a considerable improvement on the preceding 8 months of rain.

If I go for a run on a sunny day in May with light winds and an air temperature of 18C, I will feel much hotter than someone who sits on a beach on a breezy and cloudy day in May with an air temperature of 18C. Both of us will feel warmer than someone who jumps in the 18C sea.

While it may not have felt like it for many, with sunshine in short supply, provisional figures show May and spring were the warmest on record for the UK. Get the full details, including how warm nights influenced the figures 👇.

The biggest temperature anomaly has been in northern Scotland. In the far south of the UK, temperatures have been closer to average.

It's been the warmest first half of May on record. And, for a change, it's been slightly drier than average too.
