many criticisms of atlas shrugged sum up to the idea that the characters are cartoonishly unrealistic. but i read the book and i keep seeing the villains *everywhere*.
if you want a basic primer of Ayn Rand's philosophy, it is that Joe's position is literally evil

upon reflection, some factors that might have helped.- too busy gawking at all the fancy math and science classes.- i had niches that i still excelled in, which made up for being “average” at others.- intentionally wanting to learn from these new interesting cracked students.

any “gifted kids” just… not experience this at all. i keep seeing this sentiment and it’s foreign to me. i went from being probably top 3 in my central il school district to going to a magnet school upstate where i was very much not that. it was wonderful.
Being a gifted kid and realising you’re not at all special after growing up is a hell of a cruel joke.

does no one know how to play chess? i read 1 comment in both the QT and the OP that mentioned the setup being wrong. did no one notice the pawns in the first rank.
Tiffany, chess is a fairly normal thing to do at a party. Even a little bit nice. If we're going to help San Francisco we have to be precise in our feedback.

in some cases it doesn’t matter much, it’s just different terminology. but in many cases it actively changes the way we think about problems and solutions in our lives.

I was thinking today about how computer scientists tend to “think in” their subject, even outside of the context of CS. ie framing life in terms of exploration/exploitation, topologically sorting your tasks, etc. do other fields do this? I think mathematicians do.

fun fact: your body uses PID loops to regulate various internal processes (ie hormones). i mean it’s literally a PID loop. there are enzymes for P, I, and D.
In the past week I learned what PID was and got something running with an inner and outer control loop. I also just learned what a Kalman filter was on YouTube while feeding my son carrots.
