iPhone snap of Albireo - a stunning double star. Mind, there’s some debate as to if it’s a true double. Taken through a telescope from my back garden in Southampton #Astrophotography #astronomy #ThePhotoHour #StormHour

I’ve noticed acorns staring to fall in numbers here in my part of Hampshire and in the New Forest. And it’s only August! Often it’s not like this until late September. Probably drought stress.

Loads of chicks-of-the-woods around at the moment and with so little rain too. Although this fungus can get moisture from the host tree. This is an urban one on living oak, spotted in town.

The second flying ant day that I’ve had in my garden this year. 🐜 about to take flight. I’ve never know two in one summer before.

Old rose bolete (Imperator rhodopurpureus) - very rare, classed as “endangered” in the UK - with oak, in the New Forest today. First time that I’ve ever seen it. You do come across some unusual fungi in this part of the country!

I could smell and see light hazy smoke hanging in the air in the New Forest this afternoon and wondered what it was, assuming it maybe a small, local fire, maybe a residential bonfire.

As well as chicken-of-the-woods there’s lots of stunning looking beefsteak fungus (Fistulina hepatica) on old fallen and living oak. A few from today.
