In my last interview with Lavel Davis Jr., I asked why he was a part of the Groundskeepers at UVA, a group pushing for social change. His words, read now, bring tears to my eyes.
I have deliberately not been on this site but this is a good day to jump in and say: 1. This is an absolute travesty. 2. The committee should be ashamed for taking this away from 90+ players and coaches who EARNED IT. FSU got treated like a Mountain West school. Let that sink in.
Penn State plays a close game against Pitt and it's fine, yet Clemson plays a close game against UNC and WELL THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AT ALL YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO STRUGGLE AGAINST THE ACC*
*Unless you play in the Big Ten and have a marquee win against ... checks notes ... Iowa.
I am spitting nails and have nowhere to spit them, and while I want nothing to do with this site, I have a lot to say. Florida State rose from the depths of hell - as one player said yesterday - to go 13-0 and win an ACC title with an 18-year-old QB who missed half the season.
Florida State is 3-0 - You know the sign of a good coach? Players who play their butts off for you. We are seeing that with the 2022 Noles. Been a long 3 years for Mike Norvell but he always believed - even when nobody else was willing to listen.
Clemson had a symptomatic player travel with their team on a plane test positive for COVID. FSU docs did not feel comfortable moving forward with the game. So ... yes the game was canceled because of COVID.
Dabo: "This game was not canceled because of COVID. COVID was just an excuse to cancel the game. … To me, the Florida State administration forfeited the game."
Florida State started the season with many wondering whether Mike Norvell was on the hot seat. Now the Noles have a W over Florida and a chance for 10 wins. Norvell absolutely should be in the convo for ACC Coach of the Year.
The administration helped Jimbo get:
Indoor practice facility
Updated + upgraded stadium
Remodeled coaches offices, locker room, meeting space
Current plans for a standalone football facility
Also was 6th highest paid coach in the country
But sure ..
Jimbo: “You can have the greatest coaches in the world, but if the administration doesn’t see things in the way you see things, and allow you to do things that way, nothing can be achieved.”
Florida State and North Carolina put on second-half clinics against their SEC opponents this weekend. The ACC, which badly needs its football narrative to change, could not have asked for a better open to the season, quite frankly.
Deion Sanders was asked about the way Jimbo Fisher left Florida State. “I don’t give a damn about Jimbo Fisher. We got Willie Taggart. The Willie Taggart era is here.”
McKenzie Milton just led a TD drive with some great throws and I just want to say what a miracle it is to see him back on a field. I was there when he got hurt and I admit, I didn’t know if we’d get to this day. It’s a testament to his hard work, perseverance and determination.
Ladies and gentlemen, the most stable P5 program in Florida is ... the team that started 0-4 ... Florida State, 5-1 since that start. What that team has done in the face of all that negativity and scrutiny is truly a testament to their hard work/tuning out the noise
One of the biggest arguments I made in favor of Trevor Lawrence winning the Heisman is that he still was incredible despite missing his top 3 receivers all year. I think tonight proves that point.
I forgot to post this Saturday so I figured I might as well do it now. I caught up with Jermaine Johnson before the Florida State game. He spoke to the team Friday night:
Bama struggles at home for 3Q against one of the worst P5 teams in the country, it's all good.
Clemson has a bad half before cruising to a 35-point road win against a team w/a winning record -- drop a spot (again). Your double standards are showing.
Bottom line: Big Ten miscalculated when it decided in August not to play, believing everyone else would follow. When ACC/SEC/Big 12 forged ahead, Big Ten scrambled and earliest it could start was just as cases began spiking. The league has no one to blame but itself.
McKenzie Milton in his own words, from the initial hit that changed his life, to waking up in the hospital not knowing whether he still had his leg, to his grueling recovery and future in football. Incredibly powerful and emotional
Wake Forest just announced starting QB Sam Hartman is out for an extended period of time for a non-football related medical condition. Praying everything is OK first and foremost.
I watched Sarah Fuller kick off with my two girls, and we all clapped and my eyes welled with tears. ... As a child, I sat on the couch with my dad so many years ago wishing I could play football, too. Seeing this moment with my own daughters, it defies words.
Teddy Bridgewater and Lamar Jackson did so much to elevate Louisville football, they left an indelible mark that will never be forgotten. It was a pleasure to cover both young men.
I’m told McKenzie Milton made it through surgery late last night to stabilize his knee and repair other undisclosed issues. He remains at Tampa General.
There's a different vibe in the Florida State war room with Willie Taggart in charge. Rap music is playing as coaches wait on letters. As soon as the letters arrive, the music switches to the Seminole war chant and coaches do the Tomahawk chop.
Wait so the SEC is mad Clemson and Notre Dame are going to wind up playing 10 total games ... the same number as ... checks notes ... Alabama, Texas A&M and Florida have scheduled in the regular season?
SEC commissioner criticizes ACC for streamlining Clemson/ND path to ACC champ game/playoff. Says SEC will proudly play all its games. Is selection committee listening?
UCF QB Dillon Gabriel said after the win vs. GT, "We're the best team in Florida." So I went to our
@ESPNStatsInfo
group to ask: Are they?
On a neutral field + with equal rest, UCF would be favored by:
1.3 points over Florida
12.8 points over Miami
14.2 points over FSU
Florida State now returns its starting QB, leading rusher, leading receiver, first-round prospect at DE, top DT plus veterans across the board. Mike Norvell told me: "We have high expectations in our program and there are no limits on what we can achieve."
I am going to need someone to explain like I am 2 why Clemson did not do this last week. Because if it had, the Tigers might be playing for a playoff spot right now. Just saying
Dave Doeren told me Holiday Bowl officials came into their team meeting to present them with the Trophy, and NC State will count this as a 10th win in their record books.
Hannah Hidalgo was, let's just say, not happy after she was told to remove her nose ring in the middle of a Sweet 16 loss to Oregon State. "It thought it was BS. They were worried about the wrong things. They should have refed the game."
Whatever your opinion on whether Manny Diaz should return, Miami is treating him like yesterday's trash - and that is a poor reflection on its "leadership" and "administration." If you want someone else, fine. But making him go out and recruit like this is ridiculous.
Jordan Travis is absolutely balling. Cool, confident, terrific decision making. He was incredible vs. UNC last year but this is a much better performance IMO because of the way he is leading this offense. It’s not 100 percent on his running. He’s a complete QB tonight.
So the NCAA has decided to flex its "powers" and deny waivers for FSU DT Darrell Jackson (2nd transfer to be closer to mom) and UNC WR Tez Walker (second transfer because ... COVID CANCELED HIS FRESHMAN SEASON). Yup, you really are proving a point here, NCAA.
I know today is a huge game day, but please keep the Virginia football team and the families of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D'Sean Perry in your prayers - Perry's funeral is today, the first of the three, and the entire team will be at all of them.
Nearly two years ago, Miami DE Jaelan Phillips was living alone in LA, taking music production classes at a community college and working for his dad, determined to forget football. But something told him not to.
Florida State has won an INCREDIBLE eight WCWS elimination games in a row. What a marvelous performance tonight … I’ve run out of words for this team. On to the championship series against Oklahoma
Every other league makes biz decisions on realignment but the ACC should be charitable and not abandon two of the best academic institutions in the world? From a school that does not play football in said league facing significant revenue gaps w/SEC, Big Ten. Make it make sense.
ND AD Jack Swarbrick told me the reason they advocated for Cal and Stanford was because “The notion that two of the very best academic institutions in the world who also play D1 sports could be abandoned in this latest chapter of realignment is an indictment of college athletics.
Quotes like these pull at your heartstrings. Darrell Jackson, on his NCAA waiver being denied: "I came home for my mom. She thinks it's her fault, but it's not."
This just in from Florida State: Gene Deckerhoff, the Voice of the Seminoles for 43 years, has announced that he will retire following his radio broadcast of the spring football game on April 9. LEGENDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Absolutely wrecked to learn UVA players Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D'Sean Perry were killed last night. I did the Groundskeepers walk with Davis in the spring- he was bright, thoughtful and engaging, a beacon of light determined to make the world a better place.
Leonard Hamilton straddles a world uniquely his own: old enough to remember a time when black head coaches were rare, but modern enough to lead an ACC program to the Elite Eight.
My deep dive into one of the most fascinating people I’ve ever interviewed.
Remember when Mike Norvell passionately defended his program and vowed, "We're going to work our butts off to go get better" ... How many of you believed the transformation would happen sooner rather than later? Florida State is not perfect, but it is growing up ...
When I first started working at ESPN in 2010, UCF was always described as a "sleeping giant." You could argue UCF has made more giant leaps over the last decade than any other program in America.
I want to thank Fletcher Magee for handling questions about a difficult game with such class and dignity. He stood in the locker room and answered all of them, owning his 0-12 night from 3. “I don’t understand how that happens. I’m sure I won’t really get over it for a while."
I know the narrative is going to be that this is typical UNC, but Virginia has been so close to a breakthrough all year, and after everything this team has been through, seeing them win this one I know has to feel so good for Tony Elliott and everyone in that locker room.
Pitt is officially the Coastal Division champ and will face Clemson in the ACC title game. How improbable is this? Preseason FPI gave Pitt a 2.2 percent chance to win the Coastal and projected its record at 5-7.
Refuse to hear anything about Auburn not caring or being unmotivated. UCF made the plays to win this game, plain and simple. I’d rank ‘em No. 2 behind the national champs.
It was my honor to tell their stories. I wrote the words, and an incredible team of producers created this wonderful tribute that I will never, ever forget. Prayers to their family and friends. May their memories be a blessing 🙏🏻🙏🏻
"Their losses are our losses. ... It is hard to understand why they were so cruelly taken, when they still had so much left to give."
We remember the lives of Lavel Davis Jr., D'Sean Perry and Devin Chandler.
UCF has waited on this moment for decades, and it hardly matters who was wearing orange and blue tonight. The Knights earned this win in every way, their first not only over Florida, but against one of the "Big Three" in state. UCF very clearly showed (again) it does belong.
Two years ago, Stanford coach David Shaw was on the verge of losing his brother. Now, they share their miraculous story for the first time. On a rare cancer, a risky transplant and how David Shaw saved his brother’s life.
Uh yeah you can see how badly Florida State wanted this one. They didn’t make it easy on themselves but their first 10-win season since 2016 is one of the most unexpected stories of this college football season. Full stop.
Florida State legitimately has a shot at a 10-win season. Will it happen? Who knows. But Noles should be favored in their final 3 regular season games vs Cuse, Louisiana and Florida. Bowl TBD. This game is a clear indication of where they are in Year 3 vs. a program in Year 1
NCAA admins admit they dropped the ball + apologize for the disparities with what the women's and men's hoops players have received but what I can't wrap my brain around is WHY they thought anything less than equal facilities/food/access was 1) acceptable + 2) would slip notice.
It is absurd that Army - and players who literally are about to make the ultimate sacrifice for this country - has no bowl game. Thank you Jeff Monken for publicly excoriating the system ... great stuff via
@ESPNRittenberg
The University of Virginia has awarded posthumous degrees to Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D'Sean Perry. AD Carla Williams presented the diplomas to each family.
My 7-year-old has her best friend over for a sleepover. Just got into a philosophical discussion over why college players should get paid. Then her friend tells me she wants to go to UCF and be a cheerleader because "I want to go to a football school."
There are a handful of us who have been around this program for a long time. This is Florida State. People wanted to know WHEN WILL THEY BE BACK. Now they are BACK and everyone wants to pile on and say NOT BACK ENOUGH. What is it going to be?
