My go to challenge for image editing models. All still fail for the open ended generative workflows I would want.

A++ memes and torch wizardry from Elana! I learned a lot. It’s clear when someone blogs out of a desire to teach others and not just flex.
New blog post: The bug that taught me more about PyTorch than years of using it started with a simple training loss plateau... ended up digging through optimizer states, memory layouts, kernel dispatch, and finally understanding how PyTorch works!

It's an exceptional group with uniques ideas and directions. It's still growing and hiring ML researchers and engineers.
🚨 We’re hiring on the Open-Endedness team @LilaSciences and I’m beyond excited about our work! We research AI that doesn’t just solve problems, it creatively explores new scientific frontiers. If that excites you or someone you know 📢 Please RT + read on 🧵👇

I'll still maintain Artbreeder, but my focus has returned to my original passion: large-scale collaborative and emergent systems for helping us create the unimaginable.

Ken's / collaborators' research has been a huge inspiration for my projects—floorplans used NEAT, corals used novelty search, GANbreeder was named after Picbreeder. So it's special to come full circle and work on this and future research directly.

Excited to share that I'm joining Ken's lab at Lila to research open-endedness and explore the future of human/agent collaborative systems for science, creativity and discovery! 🧪🤖
Important announcement (with job opportunities!): I’m thrilled to share that I just joined @LilaSciences as SVP of Open-Endedness! Lila is a new name in the AI space, but one you will be hearing a lot from. Their unique mission to pursue Scientific Superintelligence could not

Instead of better prompt-following, we need simple, composable tools that let artists sculpt their own loss functions, create custom brushes, build their own creative processes. Otherwise it's production, not expression.

When artists like Pollock invented a style, they create entirely new processes - custom tools, specific paints, body movements, etc. Current AI tools lock artists in existing latent spaces and it's caging their creative potential for creating new styles.

Artbreeder, created by @_joelsimon in 2018, was the first widely accessible tool for AI image generation. Early AI artists @ganbrood @ClaireSilver12 @PasanenJenni discovered their voices on this foundational platform. His new series Latent Lineages visualizes how it works ↓

This is very significant! ArtBreeder was the pioneer of collaborative AI-art platforms, where everybody interconnected their work - great visualisation of human culture in the intertextual meaning of post-structuralists. I wish I'd see these works IRL!
Excited to be showing prints at Art Basel with AUTOMATA! They are visualizations of complete genealogical networks of individual ArtBreeder images, revealing the shapes of large-scale, indirect collaborative evolution over time. 🧬🌌🌺
