You ask me or someone else for help when you don't know the answer. You scored a million points on the interview score card! . Programming is problem solving. Part of problem solving is being able to ask for help when you need it.

If you're a good software engineer, you know that you're not the hot shit. You aren't afraid to say "I have no idea how to do this and need help!". You pull out the right answer to a problem, not bad!.

No good software engineer answers a question from memory. I mean, sure, some can and will, but that tells me absolutely nothing about you.

I've literally only hired people that couldn't solve the interview problem right away. I'm an idiot. I don't expect anyone I was hiring to have an answer. The more important aspect of the interview is how they tried to figure it out.

Simple is the best. If your junior engineer needs to learn tooling to spin up a new instance, you're doing it wrong.
