A lesser-known type of model building in structural biology: 3D balsa wood models from 2D electron diffraction and microscopy data. This one from 1975 shows a single bacteriorhodopsin protein found in the purple membrane of Halobacterium salinarum.

“all biographers are writing autobiographies. Even the fact that you choose to write about these certain people, it’s something that appeals to you or you may have been shaped by.” .I like this. I do feel I know something deeper about the writer based on the topics they choose.

This helps with my own decision making as well. “What would I tell my daughter if she were in my situation?”.

One of the strangest benefits of having kids is that it makes it much easier to figure out what advice to give people. You just ask "What would I tell my kids?".

Came across a map of Bangalore from 1911. The city has grown over 30x in size and 50x in population since then. The original layout of railway lines, roads, and neighborhoods remains surprisingly similar. Arrows added to help align the 1911 map with one from today.

I wrote a new piece on how much progress has been made in treating childhood leukemia. The answer is: quite a lot!. Before the 1970s, fewer than 10% of children diagnosed survived 5 years after diagnosis. Now most are cured and around 85% survive that long.

Listened to this episode of CWT with Bruno Maçães while on a trip to Portugal a few years ago and it really stuck with me. I think about it more and more these days. Especially this thought.

“main takeaway is that the ideas behind inventions are often in some sense “obvious,” or at least not so surprising or unexpected that many people won’t think of them.” Very interesting piece.

Some of the most famous and important inventions - the incandescent light, the car, the jet engine, the steam turbine - were independently invented by multiple inventors. This week on Construction Physics, I look at how common multiple invention is.
