🧵6/6 In conclusion, current diagnostic tools may be underdiagnosing HFpEF in Black patients. Improving HFpEF diagnostic aids to reflect ethnic diversity could enhance our understanding of the condition and improve equity in its management. #BHF #CardioResearch.

🧵5/6 Black patients also had lower NT-proBNP results and lower H2FPEF scores, both key aids for diagnosing HFpEF. These disparities could affect trial recruitment and treatment.

🧵4/6 Findings revealed that Black patients were diagnosed at a significantly younger age and had higher rates of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, but a lower baseline frequency of atrial fibrillation compared to White patients (30% vs 13%).

🧵3/6 Using a validated Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithm, we analysed over 1 million patient EHRs to identify cases of HFpEF based on the ESC 2021 HFpEF diagnostic criteria. Our cohort comprised 1261 white patients, 578 black and 134 Asian patients. #AI.

🧵2/6 HFpEF is the most common form of heart failure in older adults. However, it is clinically heterogeneous and this makes its diagnosis a challenge. We compared the clinical presentation and performance of existing HFpEF diagnostic tools across ethnic groups. #CardioTwitter
