ADAT Recorders. Basically a VHS recorder for audio only. The tapes look exactly like a VHS tape.
At one point they were extremely expensive and considered very high end studio gear. A digital signal onto an analog tape. They sound great.

Well decided I bombed out all 3 times trying to make a tutorial about bass guitar and sub bass.

DIY mixing tip: Don't mix with the volume way up.
75-80db is a great volume that will give you a balanced perspective without fatiguing your ears.
A db meter phone app is plenty close enough in accuracy to help you out with this.

I used to listen to the Kinks and Ray Davies solo work all the time. Probably my favorite song by them is called “This Strange Effect” and it’s lesser know, despite being hit worthy.
