I was once a professional Front of House Engineer mixing all sorts of legends, festivals, helping several New York venues rebuild their sound systems (and room treatments) and I toured with some high level artist.
Here's 7 way too common mistakes I repeatedly saw while mixing
So many artist over estimate the perception of listeners.
Yes a song can sound really bad BUT most listeners will assume things were intentional as long as there is a sense of cohesion.

I think everyone should have a music hobby and that anyone can play music.
So often people say things like “I just wish I could play music.” Umm, you can.

Making music and making videos requires the same brain muscles.
I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy video editing. It’s super fun.
And now I’m all into cinematography and lighting videos on YouTube 😆

I should have started sharing a long time ago!

Well decided I bombed out all 3 times trying to make a tutorial about bass guitar and sub bass.
Believe it or not, this short video took me all freaking day to get to (and I don’t like it).
I had fun though and I tried a new video style, learned some new editing things.
DIY mixing tip: Don't mix with the volume way up.
75-80db is a great volume that will give you a balanced perspective without fatiguing your ears.
A db meter phone app is plenty close enough in accuracy to help you out with this.
Hold your phone where your ears are to get an
If you have zero musical prowess and you’re thinking, “why don’t I just generate some rock with an AI app”?
I’d implore you to stop right there.

Do you consider investing in artists?! If so, what do you look for?!

First month of YouTube has been fun but a tremendous amount of work for low turn around. 33 subs. Lost a few along the way.

George Harrison in his divine masculine phase, which once he found, is how he stayed until his death.
Even his final words were from a place of inner peace and love.
Couple things on “engagement farming”.
1) Asking questions is a great way to get to know others, the humans behind the screens.
2) Failing, being corny, writing cringe stuff is 1000% normal.
Don’t be so staunch. This is the town square. Ask questions. Risk being cheesy.
I’ve gone through a ton of set ups in my decades of music creation.
Many different tape machines, analog mixers, computers, interfaces, all the crap.
(And once lost an entire set up to theft).
I’ve also worked in many pro studios. They’re cool!

I started watching more conservative content recently just to get a feel and I’m not seeing all the supposedly scary stuff.
There’s much I disagree with but that doesn’t scare me.

I’d go a step further and say huge swaths of music fans will auto correct things in their own minds.
All the music from 1900-1980’s is riddled with flaws. Even the high budget stuff.
There’s beauty in the mistakes.

This is really important for perfectionists in general. The details you obsess over often barely matter or are even noticed by anyone but you. It's often better to smash out a project while you're in the zone, gain the experience and the completed work, and move on to the next.
I think I realized something weird I’ve been doing.
I’ve been trying all these other video formats and styles to avoid one thing, large video files.
My super power is making music. That’s where I shine. That’s where I’m happy. That’s what all my life experience feeds into.
A friend of a friend got told a guy named Frank Ocean needed a keyboard player.
He sent a YouTube video, got the gig. Started touring with Frank.
During sound checks he would play keyboard while Frank sang.
Next thing you know he was producing Franks record, and had a heavy
If you love massive amps, you should have massive amps; however, these are really rad for funky leads, psych tones, earthy juju, unique spice, especially post pedal chain, they’re like $25 (after tax!).
I used to listen to the Kinks and Ray Davies solo work all the time. Probably my favorite song by them is called “This Strange Effect” and it’s lesser know, despite being hit worthy.
Highly recommend!
Personally I'm finding AI art to be a real turn off.
I was super on board at first because I thought wow, I can make whatever I want now!

When I see AI stuff on youtube, I feel genuinely grossed out. Eye

There's musical genius everywhere, from all walks.

What’s something that lights up your world?
For me, I love being a dad more than anything.
I lost my own father to cancer when I was 8. So I know the pains of life without dad.
I’ve structured my entire world around maximizing my dad-ness 😂
I’ve been in a dozen or so bands. Bands are fun but they’re also extraordinarily difficult to maintain.
Not even for drama reasons. Just organizing multiple lives to sync up all the time.
That being said collaboration is a beautiful thing. Theres going to be pros and cons to

I love pretending to play piano/synth.
I just hit notes, some of them are bad, when I find good ones, I play them rhythmically.
It’s fun! Come hang!
Not all narcissists are out going or public facing.
In fact, our culture is riddled with covert narcissism.
Insecure people who have a hard time considering others.
Driven by fears of Inadequacy and low self esteem.
For years I’ve forced my vocal cords uncomfortably high because well the Beatles, Beach Boys, soul music etc.
Not anymore though. I’m done with that. I’m going full Lee Hazelwood. Super easy for me to sing low and I love a good masculine voice.
Not sure if anyone has noticed but I’m pushing back the release of my single.
Not for too long. Maybe even next week.
I won’t be doing some 2 month campaign clawing for playlist and blogs lol
What a crappy set up for artist. Let’s build something better!
I'm really inspired by this guy, Jon Makes Beats.

This is what I thought Bandcamp was going to be like 15 years ago.
In almost 2 decades it’s barely evolved though and now it’s become this relentless promo annoyance that only appeals to a tiny fraction of the market.

It’s going to be a drums & bass channel.
Hopefully someday I can build a sound booth
