Thus, we have identified a new therapeutic approach for the treatment of diseases of hypopigmentation including OCA. In addition, we highlight how our LCMS tyrosine tracing technique can be used for in cell drug screening with changes in TYR activity seen in just 20 minutes

We identify ampyrone as lead activating compound for both wild-type (WT) and hypomorphic forms of TYR that are associated with one form of OCA (OCA1B). Ampyrone potently increased both WT and hypomorphic TYR activity in vitro and in a 3D human skin culture system.

Working with our colleagues at the National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) we have performed an extensive drug screen for activators of purified human tyrosinase (TYR)--the first and rate-limiting step in melanin pigmentation.

We are therefore proud to highlight a recent preprint submitted with my co-corresponding author, Brian Brooks.

In addition to skin hypopigmentation, individuals with oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) often have significant visual disability, including legal blindness. As such, there is a significant need for therapeutic approaches disorders of pigmentation.

Melanin pigmentation of the skin and eyes has an essential role in the development of visual acuity and in preventing skin cancer risk. Inflammatory disorders of skin can cause significant depigmentation.

We are pleased to support selected trainees and young investigators through travel awards in the amount of $1,000.  A subcategory for DEI travel awards has been established through the generous donation from L’Oreal. Looking forward to seeing everyone this fall!
