1/5 NEW in NEURON! We asked what forelimb M1 contributes to striatal and behavioral dynamics. Short answer: almost everything*. @Markolas11 trained mice to perform a joystick reaching task, w/ and w/out a go cue, then lesioned CFA @cmuneurosci @CmuScience

I'm revamping a masters-level Systems Neuro course this spring. Please HMU with your favorite reviews and perspective pieces! Extra points for approachable and/or thought-provoking. Any topic is welcome! I might end up biasing to the BME-heavy audience.

Super exciting work and possibilities discussed today in the Brain Behavior Quantification and Sync consortium kickoff today!!!.Great job to all. (and got nerves for a talk for the first time in a while!).

I'm curious if it's a subfield thing like mew-simol / musk-simol. 3/3 of the newest phd members of the lab are team Goshan. It's weird and wild one to me. Also - apologies if my phonetic spelling isn't quite right, but hopefully you get the gist.

@pgmid @Markolas11 @adenoeagle like many things as a lab head, I had nothing to do with it but approve of the creativity and outcome.@cmuneurosci @CMU_Bio

opinoins?. they certainly fill an important niche, but my initial read is the old quote: "If you have to tell someone you're smart/pretty/skilled, you probably aren't. "

"Neurorobotics" is very broadly defined. Also, while open to those doing their own animal work, collaborative or human-centric research programs are advantageous.

Pls RT!! Do you study the brain and how we can make use of its signals? Come join our exciting faculty at CMU and @cmuneurosci. As please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Just got done with an invited virtual presentation to Google (Google X? Alphabet?). It was an exciting whirlwind - in part because I couldn't see my screen - but I think they liked it!

Powerful work by soonish-defending @Markolas11 that contributes to discussions of M1 computations and the role of M1 and striatum in action selection, kinematic tuning.

4/5Even when behav returned-ish after 10+ days kinematic tuning in striatum did not. Several lines of evidence point to this being delayed due to remapping in cortex ala @KaruneshGanguly, @adamqbauer etc. Reaches were performed but were varied, in line with aberrant str activity

3/5 What about striatum? He recorded daily and found that although baseline activity was unchanged, no motor-related signals were present for those movements that did occur, either in SPNs or FSIs.

2/5 For the first 8-9 days, mice could not do the task. Also, while they could walk fine-they froze in place for MINUTES when deciding to go left or right or switch their motor pattern to navigate around an easy obstacle (unrewarded). This also went away over several days.

Do top labs attract top quality or do top labs produce top quality?.Are NFL starting QBs the product of Natl Champ college programs or were they top tier and attracted to top programs for training and exposure?.My guess is. yes?.

I picked sports because top performance is maybe easier to quantify + institutions involved throughout one's career are exceedingly performance oriented.
