Island man, 33, Interested in some housing being built and a future for Guernsey that isn’t just feeding ourselves into the gaping maw of international finance.

Almost £350,000 of taxpayers’ money is being spent by the States on a London-based consultancy firm to develop a policy framework to grow the island’s financial services sector.

Housing costs remained a key driver of inflation, with mortgages and rents continuing to increase 👉 https://t.co/epllk6wnti

@richarddigard It’s pointless protecting derelict greenhouses sites just because “that was the deal” when they were originally built. The housing crisis of today must trump that. By replacing eyesore sites with much-needed housing, the existing green fields can be protected. Ideal compromise.

@YoungGuern Totally agree with you. Build on the derelict vinery sites whilst protecting the existing green fields. Ugly eyesore greenhouses left for decades serve no purpose whatsoever and are a total waste of scarce land. How can essentially needed housing not be a priority usage?

https://t.co/jTlrtEqpdZ Why protect disused vineries? What social purpose does rotting wood and brambles serve? I’m so sick of this attitude. People are homeless, young people are fleeing the island in droves and our economy is stagnating but god forbid we clear derelict land.

Green fields and former vinery sites have been declared largely safe from development by the deputy now leading the island’s planning regime.

I'm not saying there isn't necessarily room to cut in middle management but when you're talking real terms budget cuts you really are playing with fire. It's a fine line to walk and the damage done to the public sector in the UK over the past decade should be instructive.

Perhaps a lesson here for Deputies like Andy Sloan and Haley Camp who have hopped on the austerity bandwagon. UK prison service budget 13% down from 2010 and there's been a 128% increase in accidental releases over just the past year.

I mean it's not really "despite" is it? That's where the money comes from.

I'm sure this amendment is well meaning but it seems ill conceived to me. There are much better ways to help those who are struggling financially without subsidising everyone, rich or poor, who drives a car.

If more support is put in place are we risking getting into a position where you have a better chance of getting a flat of your own if you commit serious crimes than if you keep your nose clean and still live with your parents?

https://t.co/l21G0nI9aT I’m not trying to downplay the issues faced by people leaving prison accessing housing but everyone is facing those issues.

Concerns there is insufficient support for people once they are released from prison, as well as alternative sentencing options, could see the States debate an independent report into Guernsey...

the way how there's little difference between minimum wage and a £30k salary these days but companies still out here like, "a very generous salary of up to £30k"
