First up the Hoopoe!
In

they were sacred and a symbol for heredity and successorship!
I use twitter to talk science, fossils, and scream about bones.
So why am I terrified to share this? This too is an unfortunate part of science...
Two years ago

✨ Day 1 of
#BoneFacts
✨
Bone is a living tissue bone is NOT dry bone is WET. WAB.
So how come you need lubricants when you need a bone saw, or what does it mean to be “bone-dry”
This is the bone wetness thread no one asked for! 💁🏽♀️ 🦴 ☔️
Supernumerary teeth are additional to the normal set
Extra teeth can be caused by a few things like an over active dental lamina (group of cells that make teeth) but are often harmless
In this case this cat tried to be a narwhal😂

This is not the move.
Othering people because of what their government is doing isn’t what we should be standing behind.
Making education more limited to those who have zero control over their dictatorships gives them less agency in their future.
This fish is so black that it's hard to photograph! Amazingly, this is the best picture I have of it, but you can't quite see the eye. Centropyge nox, the Midnight Angelfish.

WE DISCOVERED A NEW WAY TO IMAGE FOSSIL CELL SPACES!
Yes, that spinning cell space is 400 mill-years-old, also turns out fossil fish gave us bone metabolism!

I get to tell you about the time we pulled out a Brachiosaur humerus with horses!
YA’LL it was sunset in Utah and two massive Clydesdale horses pulled an extinct beast from the earth.
I FUCKING LOVE MY JOB! 🦴 🦕 🐴
Legal =\= ethical.
Always beware of someone hiding behind jargon he calls it “human osteology” instead of human remains to give himself legitimacy. He isn’t a scientist.

To academics who are silent right now.. your future students are watching and wondering if you are too uncomfortable to post or RT anything now, will you be too ‘uncomfortable’ to stand up for them.
I know it’s awkward. I know because I lived it.

Coelacanths are amazing, this group’s been around since the Early Devonian (~400 mya), and were thought to be extinct till their rediscovery in ‘38.
I wanted coelacanth earrings so I made some! What should fish should I do next?
Today in the grocery store a guy hits on me in German, I say no thanks. Again in English at the cash register I ignore him. Then proceeds to FOLLOW ME OUT OF THE STORE AND FOR ANOTHER BLOCK!!?
So I crop dusted him.
Farts the universal language.
OH HEY THERE I’m Yara the Osteological Oligarch, and my face just got distributed across Berlin!!
So let me tell you a little about my PhD research on bone evolution (and bonus fossil virus evidence) in English! 🦠 🦴 💀 ✨

3 days.
It’s been three days since I outed masters supervisor as a sexual harasser and a bully.
For a moment I felt absolutely free, and light. We weren’t the only ones who had to watch out for students anymore.
But now my dms are full of names. Full of stories. I feel lost.

If you don't see it coming, it doesn't count as touching, right? Box jellies are pretty much invisible and can knock out a careless human immediately!
So anyways this is what baby horse hooves look like when they are born... yeah.
These are called "foal slippers" also known as deciduous hoof capsules. Its said that they protect the mare's insides while also having ready-set-go hooves preordered.

Marine Iguana teeth creep me out because..

“Hi DR. Haridy here!”
I gave my defence in a fugue state of calm and osteology. Graduating with a “summa cum laude” aka highest praise.
I’m so lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful people who got tested just to attend in person.
#PhDone
#PandemicPhD
Finally it is obvious this guy has no respect for osteology or humans (check out the skull with cash in its mouth).
Osteology has a rough colonialists history, and it’s this exact mindset that got the whole field there.
Y’all liked colourful bones, what about colorful TEETH 🦷!?
#ToothyTuesday
🟪Pink/purple teeth in otters and l wolf eels is caused by eating urchins!
🟧Orange teeth in beavers and red teeth in shrews is caused by having iron in their enamel to counteract wear!
More 🦷 info👇🏽
*sigh* Desmatostylians are indeed cursed. However you cannot outdo fish teeth.
I won’t even specify a single taxon because it is trauma all the way down.
I think, out of all the groups we've seen evolve over the history of life, Desmatostylians have the most cursed teeth of any living thing that has ever existed.
I study teeth.. but when animals lose their teeth through evolution they come up with other nightmarish solutions and I love them all.
Herons and Egrets have harpoon tongues.
It gets worse because I can promise you the vast majority of those skeletons are NOT of Caucasian decent. The vast majority of human remains for collections come from India and other asian countries.
In a world where days mean nothing..
TODAY I complete my 26th rotation around our star! It’s been a great year thanks to many of you, I’ve learned so many things!!
Things like ..CACTUSES HAVE SKELETONS!?🌵 💀
As always for my birthday I ask you for weird facts🙏🏽👇🏽👇🏽

I am attempting shoulder training my cat while she’s on leash. I did not consider my massive curly hair an issue.

is simply too much snake
This extinct snake was the largest ever in-the-land-of-ever.
12.8 meters and over 1100kg* that’s a big noodle. *all estimates based on size of vertebrae
I cannot over emphasis that is simply TOO MUCH SNAKE.

I got 17 years of this mouth breathing strawberry-yogurt stealing buttface.
I’m so sorry I can’t be there for your last day. This pandemic sucks. This year sucks.
I’m not afraid that I won’t be believed. I’m not afraid of what the paleontological community will think of me. I am afraid that you won’t care.
That it won’t matter.
That publications matter more.
I’m afraid that we are all so jaded that this will mean nothing.
"Its called fashion!"
yelled the European goldfinch
I woke up feeling like I couldn't breathe, chest heavy.. anxiety clearly getting to me. Going outside and

helped a lot. Being yelled at by a finch straight up fixed it.
Just do your best, that's all.
We are telling our separate stories about the same person today in hopes that the paleontological community will hold them accountable in a meaningful way.
When you support a known abuser, you enable them, and you make the victim’s safe world smaller.

VERY IMPORTANT NEWS!
Caecilians upgraded from mucus noodle to VENOMOUS NOODLE!! New paper shows that each of their teeth has its own gland, who's secretions have the enzymatic properties of venom.
I wonder if there is another explanation

I think informed consent is very unlikely in large collections because have you tried convincing people to donate organs/blood. It’s not easy.
Informed consent with compensation is even more unlikely...

Evolution: here have another sky murderer
Us: oh thanks! It’s related to all other sky murderers right...?
Evolution: nah I was drunk and made this one out of parrot and song bird parts.
—-
Falcons are more closely related to parrots and song birds. Because why not 🥴🥴
Like other falconets, the Philippine falconet does not hover or soar when hunting. Instead, it will perch on exposed tree branches and watch for prey, taking flight only after it has identified its target. Once prey has been captured, this bird will return to its perch to feast.
Polycephalic animals are very real! Usually the result of twins that failed to separate. Giving multiple heads or multiple faces depending on the degree of separation.
We even have some in the fossil record a hatchling choristodere 👇🏽
Fragment of a 2007 biology textbook. The photograph appears to be of a strange chicken born in 2002 in a farm in Essex, which had several extra heads and limbs that matured at different rates. It lived for 6 months. There are no other known cases of this rare mutation.

Tiktaalik and I have some big news, I will be joining
@NeilShubin

and the

to study the oldest skeletons of “your inner fish”!!
I’m so excited to dig into deep time to find out why our bones and teeth do what they do 💀 🦷
Again I don’t have issue with the idea of human remains in peoples collections (I’ll sell my skeleton idc) but other people DO have issue with it and it’s their bones.
They made them they get to decide what happens.
Good morning to all 10k of you!😱😱

It’s a special kind of cognitive dissonance to watch my fellow scientists talk about decolonization of bird names and not a peep about Palestine. Bird names.
