Wildly inappropriate that the speaker felt it necessary to specify that the student is Chinese, should go without saying

1/3 Today, an anecdote shared by an invited speaker at #NeurIPS2024 left many Chinese scholars, myself included, feeling uncomfortable. As a community, I believe we should take a moment to reflect on why such remarks in public discourse can be offensive and harmful.

The one paper I can't stop thinking about from #CHI2024 is the nocebo effect paper: "The Placebo effect is robust to negative descriptions of AI". This was really stellar work with wide ramifications for the field. Should've gotten Best Paper.

With another semester ending, here's your annual reminder that teaching evaluations systemically disadvantage women. Even when controlling for grades and other factors, students (esp. males) consistently give female professors lower scores. This can have serious ramifications.🧵

Conference locations are becoming more accessible (great!!) but conferences are still very expensive for most people in the world. Please considering sponsoring @QueerinAI (and when the time comes @WiNLPWorkshop for EMNLP) so we can help more authors actually make it in-person!!

Consider sponsoring our NAACL workshop! Your sponsorship will help authors and workshop organizers fund their travel and registration. We provide sponsorship options from all levels. See more details here:

Claremont Faculty for Justice in Palestine have released a statement saying they are “appalled by the college’s actions. “On Friday afternoon Pomona College took aggressive action against the protesters, infringing on their rights to free speech and peaceful protest.”

BREAKING NEWS AT POMONA COLLEGE: 30+ cops have arrived on campus in full riot gear to arrest students who are currently trapped inside Alexander Hall. Earlier today, students initiated a sit-in in response to the administration violently confiscating their mock apartheid wall.

I wish we could stop worrying about whether something is intelligent or whether something is general, and just focus on whether something is useful, whether something helps people, and whether something moves society in a positive direction. >

It was an absolutely honor to contribute to the Data-Sitter's Club, which is a project I've always deeply admired. Shoutout to co-authors Sathvika (HMC '24) and Quinn for being so fun to work with on this.

Is this my favorite thing on the internet? Is @XandaSchofield the best at explaining things and is Quinn Dombrowski brilliant for creating The Data-Sitter's Club? Yes yes yes! "DSC #20: Xanda Rescues the Topic Model Disaster" https://t.co/6UAVPs8kPq

Considering the mind-boggling amount of $$ flowing through #NLProc right now, it's surprising to hear that @WiNLPWorkshop has funding shortages. If your org has cash, please reach out to WiNLP to help them fund underrepresented authors at @emnlpmeeting!

Mudders made their own "Kanban Pizza," in CS 123 with computer science professor @XandaSchofield ’13. The activity helps students visualize how to get from an existing process to a Kanban system, a workflow management method that helps implement improved work systems.

For any CS PhD applicants this year: 'Grad app support programs' give informal feedback (on statements, etc) from current PhD students before formally applying. Valuable stuff. Made a 2024 tracker. Feel free to share! +Reach out if one's missing. 👇 https://t.co/MzB69pYHVz
