I hold one basic principle high as a democratic socialist: It is wrong to lie to the working class. From obscuring the oppressive class function of police to opportunistically supporting gerrymandering, we as DSA still see truth-telling as an inessential task. That has to change.

The recent media attention around DSA’s internal politics is noteworthy. It’s a level of detail that betrays a small but meaningful shift in the terrain—even negative coverage can’t help but show that DSA has a vibrant, participatory culture which neither ruling class party does.

Today, I taught undergraduate students for the first time as a teacher’s assistant for an Ethics of Climate Change course (I’m responsible for the Friday discussion sessions), and was heartened by how engaged and talkative they all were. It made me excited to teach my own course!.

In 1961, Jean-Paul Sartre gave a lecture to members of the Italian Communist Party on Marxism and subjectivity. It’s astounding for many reasons, but one is the curiosity and rigor with which the PCI engaged his ideas. We don’t have that organizational-intellectual reach today.
