College athletes are now screwed up because they can make money? People were proud and loved watching college sports just because the athletes weren’t paid? This is the antiquated and paternalistic attitude that college athletes and their advocates are up against.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) complains about how antitrust laws impact college sports at a hearing on the PGA Tour-LIV merger: “Now everybody that plays basketball in college is gonna be driving a Bentley or a Rolls. I mean, we’re gonna be seeing rap stars instead of basketball stars.”

@WinterSportsLaw “Seeing rap stars instead of basketball stars” because they drive nice cars? Has he seen an athlete from… *checks notes* any professional sport of any kind in any country?

@adamjcook_ Some people just lose their minds when college athletes get to partake in the economy surrounding college sports, just like everyone else involved in the business. Don’t get it.

@WinterSportsLaw Feels like the NCAA slipped him a Talking Points card before he took the floor. The NCAA copied it from a speech made to the West Lafayette rotary club by Colonel John Griffith in 1925.

@WinterSportsLaw You don’t watch college football, do you? Because if you did you’d have notified the increased thuggery on the field by teams like AL . By thuggery I mean playing dirty.

@WinterSportsLaw Worth mentioning Athletic Directors we’re making these type of statements about a decade ago. But also their behavior as they made odd comments:

@WinterSportsLaw No one in the future of today's aggressive interpretation of NIL will make more $ than the entrepreneurial lawyers involved. That math is about the engaged resources of Power 5 Universities multiplied by the probability of a very large settlement.

@WinterSportsLaw There are also issues with this take being rooted in racism and it is very reminiscent of the 13 Myths written by @andyhre over a decade ago...

@WinterSportsLaw Part of the appeal of college athletics was that the players live in the dorms I lived in, study in the library I studied in, and ate the same pizza I did when I went there. The facade has been cracking for a while, to be sure, but it’s gone now.

@WinterSportsLaw Proves 2 points 1. Paul has no clue about PGA & LIV golf issues. And probably cares less. 2. He's been waiting for a chance to spew anti-NIL because "the good ol' days"
