An example of why springtime maintenance procedures for cars or trucks and bicycles differ. Large heavy vehicles are largely unaffected by debris and remove the bulk themselves; infrastructure intended for bicycles needs to be serviced by rotary brush-equipped machines earlier.

For years, weâve demanded that protected bike lanes & intersections be included in all road rehab projects. Including Main, which was recently redone. Its efficient & safe. Our proof it works includes thousands of roads just like Main & entire countries who do it. Sorry Evan.
Got hit by a car today on my bike ride home at Main and McDermot. Despite being in a protected bike lane and having the full right of way, a car turned directly directly into me, failing to yield or use a turn signal. I was lucky to make it out with only minor cuts and scrapes.

Whenever the temperature warms up, we need to pounce. The secret to good maintenance is much more than plowing in the coldest months. Snow is easy. Cities that do winter well have the right amount of labour and equipment, so they can scrape, brush and sand in the shoulder season.
Would advise against using the cycling lane on Assiniboine (this is at Garry). Very dicey and mostly flooded. I cycled on the road, which is also in terrible shape, but at least not covered in ice and melting snow. @cityofwinnipeg I've got one more report in this thread...
