#GroundSquirrel develop “reversible #cataracts” during #hibernation, with their lenses quickly clearing upon waking. Using GS-#iPSC-derived lens epithelial cells, we explored the molecular mechanism behind this, pointing to a potential treatment target.

Congrats to my former postdoc, now Prof at SYSU, Jingxing Ou, on the discovery of FOXO1 as a key factor in cold adaptation. Many thanks to @NatEyeInstitute for supporting our research on hibernation, seemly unrelated to vision. We do have a follow-up story on cornea storage 😉.

This model not only offers a platform to study human microglia but also showcases the potential of cell therapy, allowing replacement of aged/harmful microglia with younger/healthier ones in retinal and other neurodegenerative diseases where microglia play a significant role.

The transplanted human microglia responded to injuries just as the native mouse microglia did.

In collaboration with @WaiTWong1, Wenxin and the team successfully transplanted human iPSC-derived microglia into the mouse retina. These cells integrated seamlessly with the native mouse microglia and remained in place for up to 8 months!
