Strike averted at the Southern California News Group, where Guild journalists have wrung more than $700,000 in new newsroom spending out of Alden Global Capital. Many journalists here went years without raises; some hugely underpaid members will get pay hikes of over 48%.
🚨🚨We've reached a tentative agreement! Our Nov. 2 rally in Santa Ana is canceled and we are lifting our strike deadline for now. We will hold a ratification vote soon. Here are some of the gains we’ve made:

"We welcome WLRN content creators to SAG-AFTRA. It’s amazing to see additional public media employees organizing for power and we look forward to the employer's response to the voluntary recognition request,” said SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.

Google is 1. an illegal monopoly 2. that sucked ad money out of local news for years 3. to help fund $20+ billion a year in noncompete payouts to competitors 4. to ensure we all stay stuck with a monopolist search platform the answer is hell yes, they should pay us *back*

As a steward at LAist, I’m incredibly disappointed to share that we’re losing valuable colleagues today.
@LAist announced layoffs this week & began notifying employees who will be let go today. We aren’t sure yet how many union members will be affected. But we are already losing 11 unit members and 10 more members of our staff to voluntary buy-outs. We’ll have more to say soon.

I was one of the people laid off from @LAist yesterday. I didn’t take the buyout bc I was excited about some of the things I had in the works. I’m sad I won’t get to finish them, but I’m really proud of the work I did there and grateful for my colleagues and all I learned.

On top of these major victories, we also secured higher on-call pay and higher anniversary raises. HUGE thank you to everyone who emailed KPBS and SDSU voicing their support for our union. We invite you to celebrate with a donation to KPBS! https://t.co/36aN1DTOat 6/6

After we began advocating for public transit passes, SDSU announced it would start offering us monthly MTS passes for $42 — a $30 discount. KPBS management is exploring deeper discounts, which we will continue to fight for. 5/

For the term of this contract, KPBS has committed to not using any AI-generated voices or “digital doubles” for any content currently produced by our union members. Future AI expansions that impact our jobs must go through the bargaining process. 4/

We won new promotional opportunities for staff in graphics, video production, web development and radio operations. And we secured the opportunity to bargain alternatives to any future layoffs (none are currently planned). 3/

All staff will receive a minimum 5% cost-of-living raise retroactive to July 1. We also blocked a last-minute effort to tie these raises to CSU funding in the state budget. Sacramento politics have no business dictating the operations of an independent news station. 2/

We’re thrilled to announce our union reached a tentative agreement today with KPBS and SDSU Research Foundation management for a 3-year contract. This will now go to our members for ratification, after which we’ll be sharing more details on what we secured. 1/2
