- Press & Morgan superb performance over long career
- Rapinoe assists leader
- Swanson, Williams & Heath balanced goals & assists
- Strong performance from young players
@FOXSoccer
@CarliLloyd
So Carli, the fans come 8,000 miles to watch their team play, spend thousands of dollars probably their entire discretionary budget and you want the players to stick their nose up and walk away, just because they had a bad game? Take it out on the fans? Seriously?
@TWDTV1
@sluggahjells
Right. Why interact and engage with the fans that travelled thousands of miles and paid thousands of dollars to see their fav team, players. Instead be quiet, stick your nose up and ignore the fans. Makes (no)sense to me.
@statsandedits
It’s just a shame that her stellar international career could end with a devastating loss in a tournament where significant contributions are not acknowledged or understood by many fans.
@USWNT
@ConcacafW
Welcome back to our veteran forward Alex who earned her return and then some and to Megan who looked great in her return to fitness yesterday. Sorry for Christen who was injured or she would have earned her way back also. Order and reason restored. ⚽️💪

This SUCKS! Stop lying to the long standing fans, telling us the vets will be reintegrated in the Spring. Bring back our FORWARD VETS.
That makes Lynn’s ‘drought’ longer than Alex’s by 1/4 of a month. But you’d never know it.
Interestingly, BOTH Lynn and Alex had THREE assists during this period. But you’d never know it. Gotta love the media.
FUN FACT: They said her best days were behind her. That injuries had taken their toll. That she would never return to her former self. Well...from the end of the 2015 WC to now, Alex Morgan has tallied a mind blowing 49 goals. They were wrong. What a cycle!

Thinking about the year
#AlexMorgan
had. GREAT all around play. Solid stats. Major contribution in WC. Resulted in ESPY for POY. Time Most Influential. Voted to FIFA Best XI. Finalist for everything, US Soccer PoY, FIFA Best, Ballon d’or, Globe award for PoY. On all decade lists.
@jrsupremacy
2nd all time in Pride goals only a few behind Marta. Plus 10 assists. All for an average team. Also strong defense play for a 9 position. They call it the ‘beautiful game’ because it requires all 10 field players to contribute to win consistently. Didn’t happen on the Pride.
The 2022 Challenge Cup produced a bunch of goals. One key metric is goal contributions (g + a) per 90 mins. Leaders shown below (thru Group Stage). Data from .

Best years for
#AlexMorgan
as I see it. Your thoughts?
1) 2012. (Greatest year of any female in soccer)
2) 2022. (Golden boot NWSL; Should have been MVP)
3) 2017. (Top form across OL, Pride & NT)
4) 2018. (NT PoY deservingly)
5) 2019. (100th NT goal)
6) 2023. (Assist queen)
2024?
There is no doubt in my mind based on 2023 NWSL stats, Alex Morgan was the most valuable player for the Shield winning Wave.
Girma, Shaw & Sheridan were huge, others impactful, but Alex was indispensable. ⚽️💪
STATS TALK: Just how good are our WNT Forward vets?
AMAZING!
Leaders off the field. Mind boggling on field performance.
Over a 10+ yr career from 0.69 to > 1.00 goal contributions per 90 mins. leaves no doubt why they will always be role models and heroes. ⚽️ 💪
You give everything to be the best possible player. You succeed in ways most can only dream of. You spend your ‘spare’ time helping the sport grow, protecting fellow players, supporting teammates, forming a Homebreak for the less fortunate, more.
And this is the thanks:
#USWNT
@itsmeglinehan
This is very simply and far and away the best article of the World Cup. And I agree it is so disheartening that it had to be written. But it did indeed have to be. THANK YOU MEG!!!
#USWNT
@alexmorgan13
I am so happy for you as this is obviously what you want and it’s a beautiful and rewarding experience. But I am devastated about no longer enjoying your amazing talents on the pitch. Best of luck and thank you for years of soccer joy you spread on my life.

YEAR END: This is after the Nov. Friendlies. Club + Country. G+A per 90 mins. Vets held top positions. Friendlies raised Hatch and Purse profiles. It’s one stat, but an important one for Forwards. The average is 0.66.
@itsmeglinehan
For 8 cycles there’s been a method to gradually integrate new players. It’s proven. It works. Vlatko force fitting new players. Denying vets chance to defend their position. Now he’s saying vets are like retired players? He’s delusional. And he’s disenfranchising long time fans.
With Mal out it is now time to congratulate Alex on winning the NWSL Golden Boot. With an expansion team. First time with these players. At 33. Quite a feat. 1️⃣3️⃣ ⚽️🎯 🙌
Here’s a take. With all that’s been written & gm video, Sweden could very well underestimate
#USWNT
.
If US players can come out of their doldrums, coaches create an actual gm plan, and players execute, US could very well beat Sweden. Talent is there. Just needs to show up.
You know
#AlexMorgan
in 2012 tallied an amazing 28 goals and 21 assists. But did you know by herself she scored and assisted more than the combined total of all her opponents in 32 games that year (21 goals, 12 assists)? 💪⚽️
Great article
@LakenLitman
Every day in camp Alex is always taking me under her wing, helping me, explaining things to me,"Smith says. "She’s just someone that I’ve looked up to my whole life. So playing with her now, it’s just the best thing ever
According to my calculations, at the ripe ~young age of 32, she scored 21 goals and 4 assists, 25 total goal contributions, inc 2 Hat Tricks, 3 braces. Not too shabby for someone some think is over the hill.
Happy birthday Alex Morgan! 🎂

Keys to a

WC victory:
1)Morgan stays healthy
2)Newbies exhibit form from NWSL
3)Ertz, Lavelle return to full form & fitness
4)Girma retains calm composure under high stress
5)Naeher steps up like 2019
6)Vlatko keeps his finger off the panic button
7)Calls go our way 😉
@ussoccer_wnt
All great goals. But one major goal was omitted. Lindsey Horan’s header vs. AUS right at the end of the game was key to winning the ToN and is definitely one of the most memorable of the year.
@HeatherOReilly
That is absolutely nuts. Would result in a few super teams and the rest mediocre at best. Ruins the competitiveness. The players end up being unchallenged or overwhelmed. No one wins.

Hope’s response is nonsensical. Obviously the back pay can only benefit stated plaintiffs. This has been known from day 1. $24m after 6 years is called being practical. The equal pay benefits ALL future players. No downside. If CBA happens, huge win. If CBA stalls no worse off
Alex had highest xG of

players, but 0 G.
Too many fans, woso media:
She’s done. Bench her ass.
Should retire.
Big(est) disappointment.
Me, every smart coach, esp Stoney & next NT coach
A little tweak back into
peak form & it’s
Golden Boot again.

@alexmorgan13
So you’re point is if Alex at some point in her career MAY have committed a reckless foul, than the reckless foul from last night should get overlooked as payback?
There is a misconception that Ellis didn’t tryout youth. Ellis brought in Franch, Naeher, Dahlkemper, Sonnett, Horan, Lavelle, Swanson, S. Mewis, Long, McDonald, and those that didn’t make the cut. But it was gradual, continual, purposeful. This cycle it’s a free for all.

Active in attack with 3 shots.
Found open player to assist goal 1
Fouled in box to set up PK goal Tracked back to play “D”
Second in team scoring w/ 5 goals
Game winning goals in 2 games
2x fouls won vs conceded
How exactly is she underperforming? Please be specific.
Very happy with Alex’s play this tourney.
#1
in shots & SOG for tourney. Constantly threatening. Top 5 in goal contributions (3/1). Built to 90 minutes fit. Looked like she could go another 45 today. Solid back tracking on D, & work rate especially today. Connecting well. 💪⚽️

🏆 CONCACAF Best XI
🏆 Led San Diego to an NWSL semi-final in their inaugural season

@USWNT
@ConcacafW
How do you justify taking a forward with fewer goals and fewer assists playing in 2023 on both the NT and NWSL team?
Answer: she’s younger.
The new USWNT criteria amounts to age. It’s astounding how the program has declined.
@USWNT
@ConcacafW
This feels totally random. Without a Jan camp to vet the players to make a quality selection, you went with age. You selected players that had worse stats than players left off the roster. This process has degraded significantly from past years. I suspect the results will show.
@olneyce
Scoring a few more goals does not make her better. So many other things Alex and other forwards have done well from hold up to high pressure to play making to defense. Want more minutes, that’s competitive spirit. Lowest point of your career that’s nuts.
Alex’s was freakishly unlucky, unappreciated, disrespected and, worse, injured (hopefully minor) after being subbed in with minutes remaining for reasons no sane person could fathom. I prey she puts this behind her; focuses on Charlie, returns to the Pride where she is valued.
@ussoccer_wnt
@alexmorgan13
Alex’s goal scoring prowess was awesome all year. But your Making The Case profile grossly understates Alex’s value. Effective, timely hold/up, pinpoint passing into the box creating great chances, crucial clearances in front of opposing goal are huge reasons for USWNT success.
#️⃣1️⃣3️⃣ “Morgan enters the November FIFA window with 198 international appearances and is on the verge of becoming just the 1️⃣3️⃣th player in USWNT history to amass 200 caps.”
The milestone would occur on November 1️⃣3️⃣.
@ussoccer
@USWNT
@AlyssaNaeher
Naeher’s penalty save in the WC semi was one of the greatest moments in US Soccer history. May not be a technically memorable save, but the impact was astronomical.

BULL!! “Yet, it's Alex Morgan. She was supposed to be the next one. We gotta keep propping her up, pretending she's a superstar…”
120g (5th all time) + 50a (9th) in 211 caps for NT. 58g (5th) + 27a (5th) in NWSL. Many championships & golden boots.
SUPERSTAR!!
“I think we're getting better at working off Alex [Morgan] and I think the more time we get, in terms of training and working around her and the more time she's on the pitch, that will keep improving...”
Vlatko’s changes:
- OCT: “this is why we have her
(Alex), she scores goals…”
- NOV: “they’ll be back in the
Spring”
- JAN: “as long as they stay fit”
- FEB “they need to perform in
market; we don’t call up
Mia Hamm”
Is he fit to be coach?
@USWNT
@Nike
Great concept. Not only because it honors great people. But also brings out the individuality of the team members. Gets us closer to them. Brilliant!
As ppl are enjoying blaming Alex for all NT ills, consider 2023 NT goal contributions:
- 7: Morgan, Rodman, Mal
- 6: Lavelle
- 4: Horan, Smith, Williams
Perhaps other factors at play? Final pass quality? Creative buildup? Predictable passing? ineffective set pieces?
#USWNT
The way the
#USWNT
manhandled SWE who comfortably beat JPN and you have to think that despite its group stage issues one more pressure PK made and US is making a deep run.
“Forward Alex Morgan, who comes into the SheBelieves Cup with 201 matches played for the USWNT, will be honored before the opening match in Orlando for earning her historic 200th cap”
@tayvincent6
@SoccerInsider
Just like Vlatko. We keep on looking, evaluating, testing… and then loosing. The right way is Jill’s way and all predecessors. You pick a squad not to assess, but to hone and perfect. We didn’t even have a Jan camp to begin the buildup. This is just madness. The end of the USWNT

finalists. Many qualified players. But there is no doubt that
#AlexMorgan
is highly deserving. 2 POY awards (US, CONCACAF) in the period. Silver boot in WC. Led USA in scoring by a lot in the period. Drew the key fouls. All around play. Leadership.
So hard when you’re a consummate pro to not be able to do your thing. She brings so much excitement to the game. Love to watch her perform as many do. But know in my heart the rehab is needed. And she will be back fit and healthy next year. Some long months ahead as a fan. 😔
This year has had the highest of highs but along with that comes challenges and sometimes even falling short of my goals I set for myself in 2019. I’m disappointed I won’t be able to compete with
@ORLPride
for the remainder of 2019 due to a knee injury...
Hey
@NWSL
sorry to tell you but your web/app update is absolutely horrible. Stats used to be able to rank by goals, assists, shots, SoG, others. Now you have ‘general’ (goals) and ‘attack’ (?). The Schedule no longer auto scrolls to today. EMBARRASSMENT! REVERT BACK!
