Native forest logging was meant to be over in Victoria. Why are the chainsaws still going?

Environmental lawyers said the state government agency, Forest Fire Management Victoria (#FFMV), was acting “with impunity”, and conservationists and the Victorian Greens called on State and Federal minister to step in' https://t.co/4oVxjpMqd2

The last few days have been heartbreaking The phone calls i've had to take from young people, hearing their broken voices and tears that their efforts came to zero to avoid deaths to endangered wildlife and old trees is gutting. We can do better @Steve_Dimo @tanya_plibersek

We are back out in the Yarra Ranges National Park assessing trees🌳 we surveyed close to a month ago, we sent that data and evidence to @FFMVic @Steve_Dimo @tanya_plibersek weeks ago, here's a thread on what we found today (Wednesday 16/5)

@tanya_plibersek @VictorianLabor @abcmelbourne @guardianeco @patagonia @theage @RSPCA @HSIGlobal @vnpatweets @EJ_Aus @FFMVic @Steve_Dimo These animals didn't need to die. Each animal killed is another step towards extinction. Poorly planned operations like those by @FFMVic are driving habitat destruction of critical habitat for species like this Greater Glider and our State emblem the Leadbeater's Possum

@tanya_plibersek @VictorianLabor @abcmelbourne @guardianeco @patagonia @theage @RSPCA @HSIGlobal This tree was home to two Greater Gliders Our teams with @vnpatweets and @EJ_Aus submitted these threatened species detections to @FFMVic @Steve_Dimo and @tanya_plibersek pleading to reduce the impact of these works. We still haven't heard from them, but the trees kept falling

Under State and Commonwealth law the loss of hollow bearing trees is a recognised as a driver of wildlife extinction across the country. These trees take over 150 years to form hollows, many likely standing before colonization This tree had a family of 3 Greater Gliders in it

Hours ago this old growth tree was upright like it had been for centuries before hand, it was also home too a Greater Glider who likely shared it with a range of other species such a Gang Gang Cockatoo, Microbats and Forest Owls 🦉

For over a month, conservationists had warned a Victorian government plan to fell old-growth hollow-bearing trees in Yarra Ranges National Park would kill endangered wildlife. This morning a flattened greater glider was found next to a tree. https://t.co/7lZJUuYzSm

This is old-growth logging with no mitigation measures for wildlife. This is endangered wildlife culling from the Victorian Government. We are calling for an urgent halt to this Logging immediately! More endangered wildlife is on the chopping block
