In the wake of a great deal of hype and scare-mongering about 'AI', we've designed, with several partners, reviewers and contributors, an Open Suggestion framework for 'AI' that we hope is a great, practical starting point for guidance. #me_we_it.

At a time of unprecedented disinformation, with many feeling lost about what the facts are re. Ukraine & the criminal, unprovoked war being waged against them by the Russian Federation, @TheStudyofWar has published a clear, brief, and invaluable statement.

N.B. "Apple is not the only company operating in the UK offering e2ee backup. E.g, you can enable e2ee for chat backups in WhatsApp or from Samsung Galaxy phones. If other companies have been approached with similar requests, it is hoped that they will also stand their ground.

With its demand, the UK has chosen to make its own citizens less safe. Albeit the lesser evil, disabling Advanced Data Protection is an appalling outcome that the World Ethical Data Foundation fully opposes. Both in practice and principle, this is wrong, illiterate, & dangerous.

Any backdoor built for the government puts everyone at greater risk of hacking, identity theft, and fraud. Yet Apple's decision to disable ADP for UK users also leaves people at the mercy of bad actors, depriving them of a key privacy-preserving technology.

@ProtonPrivacy. This blanket, worldwide demand put Apple in an impossible position. Apple has long claimed it wouldn’t create a backdoor and in 2023 filings to the UK government, the company specifically raised disabling features like ADP as an alternative.

The UK's surveillance laws are now some of the most extensive in the world. Forcing Apple into a position where it removes e2ee in the UK sets a dangerous precedent. Proton would never build a backdoor, but we wouldn't open the front door by removing our e2e encryption either.

@EFF. "Advanced Data Protection is a feature in iCloud that turns on e2e encryption for files, backups, etc. Had Apple complied with the UK’s demands, they would have been required to create a backdoor not just for users in the UK, but wherever they are.

Well, this is really bad. Apple has chosen to pull end-to-end 'Advanced Data Protection' from devices in the UK in response to a Home Office demand that they install a backdoor. An illiterate, untenable demand.@zsk.@BigBrotherWatch.
