Geologist, outdoor sports enthusiast and rare breed sheep farmer. Current research focus on the application of Virtual Outcrop methods in geology 🏴
I made a decision when I came on twitter to keep it strictly for work. I have other social media for expressing personal and political views. However, given the events of the last week, I feel compelled to say something - so here is my bit
#BlackLivesMatter
#WhitePrivilege
@NiallHarbison
is without doubt the best thing in my Twitter feed. Amongst the constant stream of negativity, anger and general whining, his work rescuing dogs in Thailand is a beacon of positivity. Always makes me smile every day. Thanks Niall, Tina, Rodney, Whacker and the crew

We are delighted to announce the launch of - a new online database of 3D models, including
#VirtualOutcrops
for the geoscience community. We welcome feedback and contributions, please remember that this has been rushed out due to
#covid19
#Fieldwork
is important because it proves
#Biology
is more interesting that
#geology
. On most geology trips, students immediately rush to look at/photo dolphins, lizards, snakes etc etc On no biology trip ever, did the students get distracted by the turbidites....
@kateweaverUT
I like the passive voice, its how we were taught to write technical documents - saying "I did this" or, "we will show" sounds like a school essay about your summer holiday. Its about the science not the writer. Can see its becoming more common these days - maybe I am just old
How do Virtual Fieldtrips compare to “the real thing”? The following thread is a summary of our recent paper in which we systematically compare virtual and in-person fieldtrips to Utah and the Spanish Pyrenees… 🧵

I first saw Maria Tharps amazing map of the ocean floor in 1984, probably about the time it was published and it totally inspired me to study geology and be a scientist

This map is blowing my mind. I know I am supposed to know this stuff already but now it makes sense that Canada and Morocco are conjugate and that the Falklands/Malvinas started east of South Africa and as for Greenland and Portugal touching, wow!

They are called burst sweep cycles, the water is flowing over sand dunes on the river bed and as the current crosses the crest of the dune and expands and recirculates causing burst :-)

A few years ago I was in discussions for a great post in a western US uni. I discussed with my wife, she said no way would she take our 2 young kids to live in the US. It’s not just the threat of being shot (small) it’s the trauma of shooter training, bullet proof backpacks etc
Dear Alex Lawson
@guardian
- regarding today's article on Rough, oil, gas, water, hydrogen, CO2 etc are not stored in "vast caverns under the ground". As an energy correspondent it would be good if you took Geology 101 and stopped perpetuating misconception...

Just been told by the University Management that we are not allowed to take this years MSc class to Utah.
#VirtualFieldtrips
are great but I am gutted for the students and I really, really need a dose of Utah :-(
I am very sad to hear that my good friend and collegue Wojtek Nemec has passed away. He helped me immensely when I arrived in Bergen and we shared many good days in the field in Turkey and Portugal - sleep well old friend

I hate football and when I had 2 daughters, I thought this is great I never have to stand by pitch in the rain on a Sunday morning m. Oldest daughter got into it somehow and is pretty good. Then I had to learn to play so she can practice in the garden. It’s totally worth it ⚽️
My Twitter is just for geology - so here is me and my research partner checking out the Devonian fluvial conglomerates 500m from our front door. Geology with added biology.

Geology takes you to some awesome places. 20 years ago I found this amazing, previously undocumented, petroglyph panel high on a cliff in a remote part of the Book Cliffs in Utah. Last Sept I went back to photograph it with the UAV

Been a busy 16 days collecting data for 4 different projects and reccying with two great PhD students - yesterday we collected our 50th virtual outcrop dataset of the trip! It’s great to be back in the field and great to be back in Utah!

We are getting closer to being able to release a batch of

I’d just like to point out that while it maybe Pi day in some place (3.14) that’s mainly the USA with your strange date format - for the rest of the World, we’ll stick with 22nd July (22/7) which is more accurate and in the correct format :-)
We are working hard to have a workable solution for sharing virtual outcrops - it’s tough when most of my colleagues are in Norway and schools are shut so they can only work evenings. They are all awesome and a test batch should be available mid next week :-)

I'm surprised about the number of people who are negative about the GSL at Burlington House. I dislike London but I love history and tradition. IMO it would be a tragedy if Burlington House became another Costa and the GSL ended up in on the edge of a business park in Slough. 1/2
