DYK? Bertillon also created the first scientific system for IDing criminals, using detailed body measurements (head and middle finger length, arm span) & an index card system filed by physical dimensions using hierarchical, numerical classification derived from key measurements.
I always enjoy an opportunity to post this ~ Alphonse Bertillon, pioneer of the front-&-profile criminal mugshot, did some practice runs with his nephew, a notoriously hardened criminal, aged 2. His crime? 'Nibbling pears' (Silver albumen print, 1893 MoMA)

I try not to hammer people with the intensive animal ag critique- you have to travel your own path relative to animal welfare & food. But read this and weep. š
Stolen innocence. A tiny piglet snuggles on top of his mother for comfort. MOM is locked inside a steel cage so small that she canāt even turn around. HE does not know that heāll be permanently removed from her in a couple of weeks and fattened up for slaughter. Toronto Pig Save

A recent case concluded with accountability - guilty plea secured, 2.5 year sentence plus extended probation. Our forensic veterinary evidence helped give this victim a voice. Most importantly, they're now thriving in a safe, loving home where they belong. Justice & healing. š¾

This year, a Georgia court sentenced a man who abused 107 dogs to 475 years in prison. Also, this year, US factory farms confined over 70 million pigs in equally abusive conditions. None were prosecuted. Imagine if we enforced our anti-cruelty laws against all animal cruelty.

Thank you @RepDaveJoyce for re-introducing H.R. 1477, Animal Cruelty Enforcement (ACE) Act. (The bill would establish a dedicated Animal Cruelty Crimes SectionĀ at the Department of Justice to aid in the investigation, enforcement, and prosecution of animal cruelty crimes.)

I love having the HQ for @VetInvestigator at New England Wildlife Center in Weymouth because I can be writing up a report of the most heinous case of animal abuse & then the school buses pull up - joyful voices tumble out, reminding me of all the good in the world.
