My take for Stimson's @SAVoices on the past lessons compelling India to break free from ritualistic restraint and why the doctrinal shift stems not only from growing frustration with diplomatic protests but also orchestrated power transitions in Pakistan. https://t.co/7N5HM5CKZr

Breaking free from ritualistic restraint has never been easy, but India's determination now goes beyond merely challenging Pakistan's nuclear bluff.

The dumbing down of journalism in India, the PIB-ness of reporting, the WhatsApp briefs doled out in the name of analysis, the pussilinamity of editors, the inherent biases of star journalists who always claim to be speaking truth to power and rarely do it, the noise, the din —

After the delivery of two F404 eng-one in March and July,GE was supposed to deliver another 10 eng by Dec 31st at the rate of 2 every month starting from August. Instead GE now plans to deliver only 3-5 by Dec 31st. GE is taking us for a ride in the name of supply chain issues.

In the coming weeks we will have plenty of guys from MoD to IAF & retired vets explaining how 114 non-stealth fighters inducted at the gucciest of price is gonna let IAF keep the edge while PLAAF crosses 300th J-20 & will be inducting a 100 VLO fighters/year from now.

Doable only if you increase the IAF capex significantly. If so, then it's possible, otherwise at $7 Bn yearly spend it is not possible. Per se the proposal is logical provided India focuses more on the 5Gen platforms rather than loading up on Rafale.

Given IAF’s depleting fighter jet squadrons, a possible solution that is being thought about may work out to be the best possible ‘interim’ arrangement. It goes something like this: Buy 3-5 squadrons of Rafales (with a mandatory Make-in-India component thrown in), simultaneously

Point isn't that India is too poor to invest in R&D, but that India is not rich enough to keep spending lavishly on off-the-shelf imports, not do anything about ballooning pension expense, and also spend historical proportions on R&D on multiple def projects - at the same time.

Puzzling, since the same or more can be said about the US, on not effectively committing both the resources and adequate attention/focus needed to balance China. Asking everyone to aggressively deter China while US engages to find not just “guardrails” but deals is disingenuous.

What is this framework that could’ve prevented it all? Did it work for US allies? Unless, endless acquiescence is an institutional mechanism? Putting all the onus and blame on India for everything is one reason why Indians are growing wary of the imaginary “security alliance”

Just saying private players should be welcomed (in-principle) is not enough, unless those who do the heavy lifting at their own accord and expense are rewarded in a timely fashion, so that they can build on the base they have created for themselves.

“we want the Indian market to open for our crude oil, petroleum products, LNG.” Indians like laughing on Europea lot, but that seems to be precise aim here, both on security and energy policy. And YoY figures of energy imports gives us an idea of the general trend on the latter.
