We all had a lot to take in as things were escalating towards the Ford government's Safer Municipalities Act.🌪This timeline helps break down some key events and shows the responses from SDC + other community groups. Want a pdf with clickable links? https://t.co/zSrtg89M6o

Want to show your solidarity? Rally your elected officials to oppose Ford's new bill: ☝️Follow groups like @DrugActionWR, @WRYIMBY, @fightbackkw that are speaking out and share their statements with your MPPs. ✌️Use https://t.co/bRxpU3TmhA to have a letter sent on your behalf.

No matter what you look like, where you come from, or how much money you earn, everyone deserves a safe, secure place to call home. As the cost of living soars, and with shelters full and often...
SDC is deeply concerned that Ontario's Safer Municipalities Act will punish people for being homeless instead of providing the safeguards & supports they actually need: housing, rent control, income security & a continuum of mental health/addiction support for those who need it.

Ford's PC government will adjourn the legislature today, take 81 days off, come back on March 3, 2025.
Q: "Will there be enough shelter space?" Premier: "We'll make sure there is enough shelter space." Like the National Post, picking on Valente's writing on safety accommodations for people with disabilities, women etc. In Waterloo region there is no women's shelter.

We cancel school buses and wouldn't dare leave a pet outside in this weather, yet we have neighbours who are freezing outdoors with no options for releif. Wheres the urgency that this SHOULD merit? How are we addressing this? #ExtremeWeather #Unsheltered

2,371 peeps experiencing homelessness. Given, not all are facing this experience outdoors, but lets not kid ourselves, there are people who froze last night. What are we doing to prevent this and support those at risk? #unsheltered #HumanRights @RegionWaterloo

At the centre of this all, I believe we must rely on a #HumanRights approach. While we CAN always do better than these bare minimums, we should NEVER do worse than these basic requirements. @RegionWaterloo

The premier is telling us that the homeless, particularly those living in tents, do not deserve the protection of the Charter, which protects all Canadians. https://t.co/XNGBlzQlkR

The premier said he wanted Ontario's big city mayors, a group of 29 municipal leaders, to show "backbone" and support using the notwithstanding clause.

Shame on @cityofcambridge Mayor Jan Liggett for endorsing literally inviting our court system to harm our unhoused neighbors.
12 Ontario Mayors are formally requesting that @fordnation invoke the notwithstanding clause to suspend encampment residents' Charter-protected rights so that they can be removed from encampments. The letter cites the Grants Pass Supreme Court decision in the U.S., which allows
