Day 5 | This heart-shaped bulla (950-800 BC) is a very rare object - 1 of only 7 found in Ireland. Measuring 2x3 cm, the maker was able to work on a miniature scale. It's likely to have been worn around the neck like a locket or charm.

On this day in 1938 a living coelacanth was caught off South Africa. Thought extinct for 70 million years it was named in honour of curator Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer who saved the fish for science. See a preserved coelacanth, and a small fossil one, in our Living World gallery.

October's birthstone is the beautiful opal. It's made of microscopic silica spheres that scatter light to create the wonderful array colours seen here. Most ‘precious opal’ is from Australia, but white opal can be found in the basalts of north Antrim.
