O'Connell and his fellow 'Repeal Martyrs' were incarcerated on charges of conspiracy in the wake of the cancellation of a planned monster meeting in Clontarf. This painting by Joseph Haverty depicts one of the meetings that went ahead, in Clifden, Co. Galway.

Today is the 250th anniversary of the birth of ‘The Liberator’, Daniel O’Connell. This rare daguerreotype from our collection is the only surviving photographic image of O’Connell that we're aware of, taken in 1844 in the Richmond Bridewell prison. 🔎
