@artukdotorg This painting shows a view off Peveril Ridge, Swanage, AD 877. The painting is an imaginative Victorian reconstruction based on an account in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of a naval battle between Alfred the Great and the Danish fleet of King Guthrum.

@artukdotorg The model is the centre of attention, while Minton shows himself to be a slight and withdrawn figure. Minton was gay at a time when homosexuality was illegal, his outgoing personality was an attempt to cover his resulting depression. Tragically, at 39 he took his own life.

Today, @artukdotorg βs #OnlineArtExchange is celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month. Weβve chosen John Mintonβs Painter and Model (1953). It shows Minton in his studio with his model, actor Norman Bowler, altering the traditional dynamic between the dominant artist and passive model.
