The real answer, the market survey revealed was.... They hadn't stopped playing. Turns out there HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE still playing D&D regularly. All through the 90s. But they weren't playing 90s D&D. Second Edition D&D. They were still playing AD&D!
