Today we remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, doubly appropriate to remember Lt. Frank Fazekas, our first archaeological recovery. He was shot down over #France OTD in 1944 flying a P-47 near Saint-Omer. He is now in @ArlingtonNatl @usabmc @dodpaa @UWMadison

A painting was created of the last moments of the “Shirley D” on 23 Dec 1944. We believe it was commissioned by a family member of one of the crew, but a copy was purchased and hangs in our offices at @UWMadison @dodpaa

We are honored to announce that our latest case in partnership with @dodpaa is now closed, and SSgt Stevens has been accounted for. He was shot down 23 Dec 44 outside Bastogne #Belgium and MIA for 79 years until our @UWMadison and @UWSystem team recovered him. @StateRelations

@AerialSheila And he is now buried at @ArlingtonNatl, after a funeral with full military honors that my family and I were invited to attend. Something I will remember forever. @UWMIARIP was very grateful for the assistance in solving this challenging case! @dodpaa @UWMadison

On excavating the site, they successfully recovered parts of the aircraft along with human remains. Following forensic and DNA analysis, the remains were identified as those of the pilot, Lt Frank Fazekas. #POWMIA #youarenotforgotten Crash site: https://t.co/Oa6rJcqmQe 04/End

An initial search for the site, based on local eye-witness reports, failed to locate the aircraft. They then sourced an image from NCAP, taken 2 days after the crash, on 29 May 1944. This then enabled them to precisely locate the aircraft impact point on modern mapping #POWMIA 3/

In 2016, a joint team from DPAA & the University of Wisconsin-Madison travelled to northern France to find the crash site of a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft.  They spent 3 weeks searching for the wreckage of the aircraft, which had crashed on 27 May 1944. #POWMIA 2/

NCAP holds worldwide aerial photography, inc. military reconnaissance images from WW2 & the Cold War. The US Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency uses our collection to help locate lost airmen, including this poignant story of an airman lost shortly before D-Day. #POWMIA 1/
