For someone who was meant to be shut out of the room, Scotland’s First Minister has been one of the greatest assets of this conference. More global Scotland please.

Happy Republic day to Italians all over the world.
On 2nd June 1946 the monarchy was ditched in a referendum in favour of a Republic. A defining moment for 🇮🇹 democracy.

This is a strong launch from
@NicolaSturgeon
. The key is not to compare Scotland to the unequal UK - but to successful, more equal, independent European nations - that’s the prize.
🏴🇪🇺
Lots of comparisons between Cummings and Dr Calderwood. Fact is Dr Calderwood admitted she was wrong & apologised. Cummings & No10 pretending nothing to see here. Staggering arrogance. And a truly dangerous man.
Here’s an ignoramus who thinks all EU nationals come here to pick strawberries. My grandparents moved to Glasgow in the 50s. Over 5 decades they opened multiple small restaurants and employed 100+ Scots. This is about expanding our tax-base so that in 30yrs we can afford an NHS.
It’s depressing to hear Sturgeon, and others, talk about immigration as if the national economy depends on the ability to import low-paid workers. Esp with so many still unemployed or underemployed. This attitude turns people against immigration, in Scotland and beyond.
For the avoidance of doubt - given recent media reports - the SNP won a clear mandate in May to deliver a referendum on independence. Not devo-max or multi-option referenda. That’s what the NEC is focused on and frankly, nothing less will do.
Hang on a minute. Some polls predicted the far right would win this election. They failed. So far around 82% of Sweden chose either the centre-left or centre-right. But don't let perspective get in the way of your headline...
Congratulations to those who craved a headline in tomorrow’s papers while the country battles a pandemic. A sad day for public service in Scotland - where errors are rarely tolerated and people’s careers thrown under a bus. Appalled.
Those describing Jeremy Hunt as a safe pair of hands - this is the man who brought the English NHS to its knees, refused to pay staff a decent wage and paved the way for privatisation. The NHS is not safe with this man in charge.
Jackie Baillie indulging in insinuation, hearsay, second-hand sourcing and spinning conspiracies live. Clutching at straws. All to raise her own profile and save her political life on May 6th.
It’s really not Scotland’s fault if No 10 can’t organise a piss up. No amount of spin from Cummings & co is going to tarnish Scotland’s reputation as a welcoming country 🏴
Scotland was the most welcoming country in the world. That a British PM - or indeed anyone at all - might feel unsafe here is more mortifying and heartbreaking than I can say.
Hi Fraser, several organisations were involved in shaping these messages, including the charity I work for. But you’re right - not all of Scotland will support this campaign. Bigots, racists and homophobes to name a few. Who’s side are you on?
In tomorrow’s Spectator, Charles Moore writes about the worrying habit of the SNP to claim it speaks for all Scots - to the point of signing government posters “Yours, Scotland”. Would the UK government ever sign a poster “Yours, Britain”?
Unexpected call from Italy this morning. Covid has taken my dad at the age of 60. Heartbroken that I didn’t get to say goodbye. Will be offline for the next while.
The Supreme Court ruling confirms that the UK is not a union of equals.
It’s Westminster politicians - not the court - who are denying the will of the Scottish people. But to suppress democracy is unsustainable - and those parties will soon pay a very heavy price.
@antoguerrera
The Colosseum does not commemorate. It was not constructed years later to pay tribute. It stands as a true relic of ancient times. No comparison
Nicola Sturgeon writes for Italy’s leading paper
@Corriere
.
“We’ve been part of the EU family for almost 50 years. We didn’t choose to leave. We hope to re-unite with you, as equals, to face the challenges of the future together”.
I vividly remember during COP26 Scotland’s opposition parties knew exactly who ran Glasgow City Council. Suddenly they’ve all forgotten who’s in charge in Edinburgh. What a shower.
Politicisation of the highest order, Jackson.
Italy has 20 regions. It is currently prohibited to leave one for another. Governors have the powers to close their doors & quarantine those coming from elsewhere.
It’s called public health measures.
My family moved to Scotland with almost nothing, the most basic education and barely a few words of English. But they were grafters. They learned the language, opened small businesses & created countless jobs. They’d never have made it here under this policy.
It is impossible to overstate how devastating this UK gov policy will be for Scotland’s economy. Our demographics mean we need to keep attracting people here - this makes it so much harder. Getting power over migration in
@ScotParl
is now a necessity for our future prosperity.
I’ve read the story. It doesn’t live up to the headline. As someone who has attended more funerals than I’d ever wanted this year all I’ll say is this - stay human.
My suspicions have sadly been confirmed:
We have a leadership hopeful who disagrees with the manifesto she stood on.
Who refuses to challenge a Westminster power grab.
Who would inevitably rip up the Bute House agreement which solidifies the pro-indy majority.
Reckless.
I hope the events of the past 24hrs clarify why the SNP can’t work with Alba - at any level.
That wasn’t one person - it’s their leadership. They’re a liability, their politics is vile and would cost us the referendum. I say it in all sincerity.
Congratulations to Jackie Baillie on holding her seat. I’m immensely proud of my campaign and my team. Our vote came out in large numbers - particularly in Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven.

SNP Manifesto: Nicola Sturgeon announces that a re-elected
@theSNP
government will establish at least one new fast track cancer diagnostic centre in every health board area. 🏥
This has absolutely nothing to do with you or your government - it’s European Directive 2015/2366 on Payment Services - which you were forced to implement by January 2018. Who’ll be on the side of the consumer once we’re gone?
From today we're banning hidden charges for paying with your credit or debit card - a move that will help millions of people avoid rip-off fees when spending their hard-earned money.
Hi Jackie. You were elected in 1999 to serve some of the poorest communities in Scotland.
20+ years later poverty & inequality still blighting lives.
How did that work out for you? You’d rather see the Tories in power than Scotland take its future in its hands.
Oh dear
@ToniGiugliano
is good at wish lists. His wish list was:
1. Stand as MSP for Edinburgh Western;
2. Stand as MP for Edinburgh West.
How did that go?
This letter was sent to me by a vulnerable older person in Dumbarton who is absolutely livid at the deception.
Scottish Labour cannot restore free TV licences to over 75s. Reprehensible.
#ChangeforDumbarton
@STVNews
Enjoy paying 9K a year tuition, prescription charges, higher council tax, less funded childcare, lower investment in public services and the list goes on. Can we stop pretending Scotland suddenly put up taxes last Friday?
Labour’s Jackie Baillie tells me: ‘I have to hand it to her’ Nicola Sturgeon has ‘led us well through the pandemic.’
But she says Scotland ‘hasn’t had the best results’ and leading the recovery takes a ‘different skillset’, namely
@AnasSarwar
Instead of threatening people with fines and kicking people when they’re down
@scotgov
acts with compassion. Hugely welcome - and effective - announcement.
We’ve gained almost 200 new members in the Dumbarton Constituency in just three weeks. Welcome to each and every one of you. 🏴
#ChangeforDumbarton
Thinking of my mum who waited over 8 months to hug me after my dad died of COVID. I could have broken the rules in both Scotland & Italy but no, I chose to keep her - and others - safe. Fuming.
A strong message from
@HumzaYousaf
today👇
🏴If you believe in Scottish independence then vote SNP.
🏥 If you want to protect the NHS from Tory-Lab privatisation then vote SNP.
🟡 In Falkirk & across Scotland, only a vote for the SNP will kick the Tories out for good.
#GE24
🥀 Labour downgraded the Vale.
🥀Labour removed the A&E.
And then spent the next decade portraying the hospital as vulnerable for political gain.
💛
@theSNP
has delivered 15 new services at the Vale since 2015.
💛And we’re delivering a 4% pay rise for staff.
Time’s up Jackie
I support any investment in the Vale of Leven hospital but the SNP have had 14 years to do this. Local people know that services rather than a lick of paint are the important things. I am the only candidate that will actually put the Vale first.
Let’s not re-write history. The
@scotgov
paper was never sidelined by the SNP - it was sidelined by the UK Government and by the Labour Party. Arithmetic doesn’t lie, Iain. Scotland did everything possible to stop Brexit. We were outnumbered.
You have evidently forgotten that Nicola Sturgeon sidelined that report and worked for a Peoples Vote instead, along with Labour and the Liberal Democrats. The UK opposition parties share collective responsibility for this deal because they failed to unite behind a soft Brexit.
Delighted to welcome
@NicolaSturgeon
to Alexandria.
@theSNP
has protected the Vale Hospital and created 15 new services here since 2015.
Re-elected, we’ll invest tens of millions in upgrading facilities - securing the hospital’s long-term future.
To the 16,342 people who voted SNP - please know that your voice has been heard. No tactical voting will stop independence in a referendum. Scotland is on a journey to statehood and I look forward to playing my part in shaping it. 🏴🇪🇺 3/3
Strange way to describe the majority of Scots, but here’s the thing - for some people there’s never a good time to leave the Union. If it’s not the pandemic it’s the financial crash... Scotland is never ready or good enough for them. They’re wrong.
Only a fanatic would think you can, or should, be planning for an independence referendum during a pandemic of this seriousness. There are plenty of fanatics in Scotland.
Thank you to everyone who voted
@theSNP
today across Dumbarton, the Vale, Helensburgh & Lomond.
My team have pounded the streets from 7am. I want to thank every one of them. Now for a good night’s sleep!
#ChangeforDumbarton
Alba accusing the SNP of “gerrymandering the result” - wait for it - because we decided not to let Alba party members back in to vote.
The biggest waste of space in Scottish politics.
Hi
@jackiebmsp
I notice you’ve had plenty to say on transparency of late - in the interest of openness can you confirm Labour’s membership figures in Scotland? And if not, why not?
@nytimes
All very well, Patty, when you have an elected head of state that you can boot out every four years. He has every right to expose further truths about a publicly funded institution that clearly isn’t fit for purpose.
I’ve never understood those who disparage Scotland’s international efforts. Advancing our interests with global partners is not in competition with local priorities. It never has been. It’s the height of parochialism.
💛NHS staff at the Vale will get a 4% pay rise in comparison to the 1% Jackie’s colleagues in Westminster are offering staff in England.
💛15 new services brought to the Vale in the last five years after Labour chose to downgrade the Hospital.
Deeds - not words from
@theSNP
.
There’s not a single proposal in Gordon Brown’s paper that will radically alter the UK’s flawed & unequal economic model.
For Scotland to thrive & compete on world stage it needs back in the single market; its own immigration rules & a full suite of tax & borrowing powers.
Good morning. I’ve cast my votes at the Denny Civic Theatre in Dumbarton.
May we have faith and confidence in ourselves to build the better nation we seek. 🏴🗳
I moved to Scotland in 1992 - the year European citizenship was established.
Tomorrow I’ll remain an EU citizen - and I’ll fight to restore those rights & freedoms to all of Scotland’s people.
We will bring Scotland home, where it belongs, as an independent country. 🏴🇪🇺
How can anyone look at the state of UK politics and conclude that Nicola Sturgeon is the one who should/could go anytime soon? Enough with the distractions - start holding Johnson to account.
Douglas Ross turned up to Helensburgh accusing the SNP of “centralisation” - just as he and every Tory MP voted to grab powers from Scotland’s Parliament. You couldn’t make it up.
I wasn’t aware that our friends in Europe who are members of NATO all possessed nuclear weapons?
We will remove obscene and immoral nuclear weapons from the Clyde.
And Faslane will thrive as a non-nuclear base.
@GrayInGlasgow
Hey
@EmilyThornberry
those voters who backed Labour time and time again now back
@theSNP
. You think they're Tories? Then you'll continue to be an irrelevance in Scotland.
1. What exactly am I calling for here if not independence?
2. I had the guts to stand for election in a seat we’ve never held and put independence front and centre. My integrity is intact, thank you.
The Bute House Agreement consolidates the pro-independence majority - backed by 95% of members. Those who want to jeopardise that - months from an election - should be more transparent about their motives.
I’m delighted to announce that the members of Dumbarton Constituency have selected me to be their
@theSNP
candidate in the Holyrood elections.
Thank you for putting your trust in me. I will work my socks off to gain this seat - I won’t let you down.
“Anti-families”. The party that doubled childcare, rolled out free school meals and restored free education? The party that shielded Scotland from the worst of Tory cuts?
No, I suspect that’s not what you’re talking about. Wee see you. 🌈
Scotland will suffer from this nationalist coalition of chaos.
The SNP-Green government will be anti-jobs, anti-business, anti-families, anti-drivers, anti-oil and gas.
Nicola Sturgeon failed to win a majority, so she needs a hand to ramp up the division and push for indyref2.
Don’t play their game on the Euro. Yes we know Sweden & others don’t use it. But a better argument is - if Scotland wishes to use € in the future as per v successful EU nations, that will be Scotland’s choice. But it cannot do so without establishing its own currency first.
🔺EXC: An independent Scotland will be denied entry to the EU unless Nicola Sturgeon commits to joining the euro, senior figures in Brussels have insisted
A clear message per four separate sources, crystallised by one: "No euro, no membership"

Growth Commision is not a manifesto for an Indy Scotland. It dispels the many myths that we‘d be worse off. Because no matter how radical the left want to be - *none of it* can be achieved unless we convince Scotland that we *can and should* be independent. Time to come together.
🔎 Douglas Ross is the new leader of the Scottish Tories.
“If you were Prime Minister for a day, without any repercussions, what would you do?”
Douglas Ross: “I’d like to see tougher enforcement against gypsy travellers.”
It seems it’s impossible to do anything in this country without the Tories getting emotional and illogical about the constitution. This is public health - and the whole world is closing state/regional borders to save lives.
We are one nation. Scottish, English, Welsh, Northern Irish. We are in this together. Please stop this divisive, nasty talk of closing borders to 'others'.
Disagree on policy or strategy by all means - but to undermine your own government, almost pretending you had nothing to do with it, is disgraceful and dishonest.
Here’s an unelected Tory Lord who helped to drag Scotland out of Europe now determined to unpick devolution.
This is why Holyrood must fight every Westminster powergrab with every fibre of its being.
My
@Telegraph
column tonight.
The SNP’s implosion is a chance to put failing devolution into reverse.
"In its misgovernment and its control-freakery, the SNP has sown the wind and, let us hope, will now reap the political whirlwind."

Huge appetite for Scotland to carve its own future as a constructive, independent European nation - and leave Brexit behind. 🏴🇪🇺
The SNP vote held up in the most recent by-election because of this simple truth: Scotland needs independence and we remain the vehicle to deliver it.
Those on the fringes, meddling & writing us off should remember they failed before & will fail again. We’ll emerge stronger.
Good to meet Convener of

Very pleased NEC has also agreed restoration of National Council in end August.
