Now preserved and based on @bluebellrailway unrebuilt ‘West Country’ No 34023 Blackmoor Vale, was the motive power for the 11.10am service from Plymouth to Okehampton on 27 May 1964, one of the few SR lines in Devon and Cornwall still with us. https://t.co/ltRbtsHSpu

Quite a modern look to this working, recorded over 60 years ago in April 1965. V2 No 60846 heads a southbound cement train near Thornton Junction in Fife, a block train of uniform, perhaps relatively new wagons, though without continuous brakes, as a Brake Van makes up the rear.

The only signs of any actual work being a slight darkening of its roof, Bulleid 1-Co-Co-1 10203 strikes the figure of modernity at Eastleigh Works in 1954. Although construction at Brighton began in February 1953, the task took over a year & it was only outshopped in March 1954.

The LMS introduced the Princess Coronation class Pacifics in 1937 of which 38 were built. On 4 April 1961 No 46231 Duchess of Hamilton is seen at Bangor working the 9.50am service from Crewe to Holyhead.

In this undated view, Castle No 5034 Corfe Castle pilots an unidentified classmate at Whiteball summit on what is noted as the 10.20am Paddington to Paignton service, passing 2-6-2 tank No 5157 which had assisted a previous express up from Taunton.

Running at a good pace with a colorful array for carriages, including a sole Pullman, behind, West Country 34097 Holsworthy flies past a lone signal gantry at Walton-on-Thames in 1954. Built nearly two years after Nationalisation, Holsworthy would be one of the last rebuilt too.

Bound for Manchester London Road, a brand new 506 set awaits departure from Dinting in August 1954. Ordered by the LNER in November 1938, the war delayed their completion until 1950 which was then compounded by a further delay due to the necessity of a new Woodhead Tunnel!

#OnThisDay 61 years ago Belmont closed (in Middlesex, as opposed to the still-open one near Sutton). For the final 12 years after Stanmore Village closed, Belmont was a one-stop shuttle from Harrow & Wealdstone. Image of final day: Nick Catford https://t.co/O9UPAxMURp

A lengthy mixed train consisting mostly of cattle wagons leaves Ballinluig, the junction for the former Highland Railway branch to Aberfeldy, on 23 August 1961, hauled by 0-4-4T No 55217, a Caledonian design dating from 1900. This line lost its passenger services in May 1965.

The Kingswear line was passed for the GWR's heaviest locos including the Kings and the 47XXs which were sometimes pressed into passenger service on busy summer Saturdays such as 4 July 1959. On that day, No 4706 leaves Churston with the 1.25pm service from Paddington to Kingswear

I've been busy with the scanner this afternoon. For starters, No 4080 Powderham Castle, then allocated to Westbury, is seen at Dorchester Junction with a Paddington to Weymouth train in August 1951.

#OnThisDay 101 years ago the @TfL Northern Line extended from Hendon Central to Edgware via Colindale (Burnt Oak was a little late to the party in October 1924). The main engineering project was Burroughs Tunnels, perfectly captured here by @Tubemapper
