New paper: Forest dynamics where typhoon winds blow. In Hong Kong, wind exposed forests are shorter and more uniform. Damage from Mangkhut, the strongest typhoon in 40 years, was higher in tall forests and plantations. @AlandHyc @CCI_Cambridge

[3/4] Instead, we found that wood density was the key factor. Low wood density species had much greater risk of wind-mortality than high wood density species. The exception was Anacardium excelsum, which was much 'safer' because of its thicker trunks.

[2/4] We measured trees across some steep topography, but surprisingly we found that wind exposure only weakly predicted wind mortality risk. This suggests the trees have adapted to their wind environment, perhaps by growing wider trunks or smaller crowns.

We’ve all seen how wind can change the shape of trees, but how does wind impact tropical forests? Our new paper answers that question using purpose-built sensors in Barro Colorado, Panama. [1/4] https://t.co/4bwpS5j0MB

2nd manuscript/paper I've seen this year that applies SEM to clearly non-independent variables in different boxes (elements of the population Variance-Covariance matrix) to 'causally explain' observed patterns. Rearranging deck-chairs won't stop the ship sinking. Please stop 🤦♂️
