Refinement of greenhouse gas emission factors for peatland and mangrove is essential to support Indonesia’s climate policy processes ahead of FOLU net sink by 2030 and net zero emissions targets by 2060 or earlier.

We further identified and proposed suitable emission factors and approaches for mangroves on peatland and highlighted the mitigation potentials provided by this unique ecosystem. We found that a high probability of mangroves being peatlands largely occurs in West Papua province.

Second, we outlined the scientific gaps to improve emission factors for peatland (e.g., drained and rewetted peatlands and peat fires) and mangrove (e.g., deforestation, excavation, restoration).

First, we show the area distribution of peatland and mangrove, and mangrove on peatland—a unique combination of two wetland ecosystems located at the same landscape and yet understudied—at the national and sub-national levels.

In this paper, we describe the opportunities and challenges for incorporating high-carbon peatland and mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia’s GHG inventory and climate policy where 55-59% of emissions reduction targets rely on FOLU sector.
