Brilliant summation Graeme Rose (The Age, 6 July). Who could argue? #Ashes2023 #Ashes23

Question: would Bairstow do as he did with the ‘keeper up to the stumps? Answer: no, because he’d be aware the keeper would likely lift the bails. So, MCC experts, does the ‘spirit of the game’ apply differently depending on whether the ‘keeper is ‘up’ or ‘back’? #Ashes23

So, Ben Stokes says the umpires had somehow implied that it was ‘Over’. Well if they did, it was absolutely their responsibility to adjudge Bairstow not out. That they didn’t means this isn’t about Australia contravening the law. Which leaves ‘the spirit’.

If so called ‘friendly fire’ isn’t made punishable, it must now provide overwhelming evidence for the defence at some tribunal cases. Over to you AFL. #AFLCatsDees

Australia’s greatest Ashes Test win in my lifetime, edging out Old Trafford 1961. Atonement in both cases: for Laker-imposed humiliation in 1956 and for Edgbaston 2005/Headingley 2019. And in both cases an Aussie skipper worked a final day miracle. Bravo. #Ashes #Ashes2023

You gotta 💚 a US Ambassador to 🇦🇺 who’ll gladly be hauled up a giant tree in our threatened forests. It was really something to meet Ambassador Caroline Kennedy today, & to talk about what makes this island so precious & rare. Big thanks to @TheTreeProjects too. #politas

Lovely to hang out with US Ambassador Caroline Kennedy. We went 60m up a giant eucalypt that’s grown for hundreds of years in Tassie’s southern forests. Such a travesty that this and other forest giants are scheduled for logging. Massive thanks to @TheTreeProjects for hosting us.

I’m sure you’re all wondering about the temperature in the room, it was all calm and cool. Only the tortilla soup was spicy hot! 😅

Cambridge University play Yorkshire at Fenner's in May 1970. The university games were the usual way of dusting off cobwebs for many counties and increasing a source of cheap runs and wickets. Geoff Boycott played in this game but only score 50 and 18

Whatever happened to 12 noon and 12 midnight? They are unambiguous and unmistakeable, unlike the ridiculous but now ubiquitous 12am and 12pm.

What a fantastic set of tennis. And excellent commentary. Alicia Molik’s scene-setter to Sabalenka’s crucial service failure the highlight, but Jelena and Sam also top-shelf. #AusOpen

Gorgeous colour footage of Round 8, 1948 at Punt Road is released from ACMI archive. Looks like shot from the old cricketers stand. Check out the Red Rattler train, the old scoreboard. ~35,000 crowd packed in. https://t.co/x24msyB296

Cam Green took a gully catch (Blackwood) in Adelaide and immediately threw the ball away. Out! No question asked. So what if Michael Neser, having completed an outfield catch well inside the rope, simply flicked the ball back? He’d completed the catch just as Green had. @7Cricket

I don’t know who needs to hear this but Neil Diamond, who retired from performing five years ago because of Parkinsons, just had a Broadway show of him open and it at the opening night he did this

It’s spread from the AFL to international cricket commentary. A couple of dictionary definitions: Verse, as a noun, means metrical composition (‘pages of verse’) and as a verb means to instruct. Versus is a preposition that means ‘against’ (especially in legal and sports use).
