NUS has moved all of its undergrad recruitment online. As part of this, I spent 3 hours filming on Wednesday for this 2 minute video - but the end result is really pleasing. Definitely the most professional looking thing I've done for work!

@HFSP We provide a clear estimate of the length scale of microtubule interaction in the early drosophila embryo.

@HFSP We utilise Ivo's great explant system to make clean and quantitative measurements. This is backed up by theoretical modelling of the aster interactions with boundaries and each other.

@HFSP We show that in the drosophila early embryo, microtubule asters interact through an effective pushing interaction.

Many thanks to @HFSP for funding most of this work. And Jorge and Sham who did so much to bring it all together.

My final (☹️) paper with Ivo Telley now out - I felt the elife system worked well - first time publishing there since the changed model. Good to have different approaches- nothing is perfect.

Using cytosolic explants from Drosophila syncytial embryos combined with quantitative microscopy and perturbations, the mechanical forces separating Drosophila microtubule asters are revealed.

Really happy to see this out:. We use FCS to reveal that Bicoid dynamics vary spatially across the Drosophila embryo. We demonstrate this can explain previous observations about gradient extent and time scale of formation.
journals.biologists.com
Summary: Morphogen dynamics can have spatial dependence, e.g. in the diffusivity, that can impact gradient extent and the speed of formation.

(Sad maths-rugby crossover joke). Why does the harmonic series converge in Ireland? . Because they can't get past a quarter. (As a Welsh fan, yesterday was not a good day either 😭).

This x1000: The short sighted policies announced over the past week are just retrograde nonsense.
