$ASTS Teledesic was (presumably) the first company to design an earth-fixed-cell based satellite system [1]. "Teledesic was 25 years too early . ", as co-founder Griffin points out. Today, AST is building such a system with their #BlueBird phased-arrays. Exciting times. 1/2
Teledesic was 25 years too early, especially on terminal and rocket launch costs. The board determined in 2002 it was better to liquidate and distribute the cash to shareholders. Being vertically integrated was essential. My blog post on that is at my 25iQ blog. Link is below.

One important note about this feat. While you can make a voice call over OTT (WhatsApp/Facetime) you can NOT make an e911 call over OTT. How is e911 performed - using VoLTE. It's the only option other than 3G fallback, which AT&T has unsetted.
