My first Substack post! Vacancy taxes have gotten some more attention in housing policy. Do they work?. The verdict: vacancy taxes have modest benefits, but do not remotely achieve what building new housing does. They are also often poorly targeted! π§΅.

RT @besttrousers: I really don't get this framing. The policy impacts of non-cash programs are also Not Great!.

The funny thing is that they could have just said βbeing outdoors is probably fine especially if you arenβt standing literally on top of each other and are maybe wearing a maskβ and been fine because two weeks later thatβs exactly what the directives for summer 2020 were anyways.
What are the best examples of scientists using the mantle of a claimed "independent authority of science to arrive at data-driven conclusions" to give weight to contested moral & political claims?. Things like the 2020 "why BLM marches are an exception to lockdowns" open letter

Somewhat related but this is why I am Proportional Representationβs strongest warrior. Yeah parties will eventually sort themselves into two roughly even competing blocs. But I never have to deal with US-style primary ideological debates ever again. Peace on my feed.
I really like this articulation!. One of the effects of the US party system is that liberals and leftists often see each other as inferior versions of themselves, not as genuinely distinct, sincere ideological blocs. This has a lot of downstream effects.

Top 5 fields to study for enlightenment:. 5. Geography.4. History.3. Economics.2. Physics.1. The Blade.
I have come to believe that economics is the single most useful field for understanding the world. Itβs very far from sufficient on its own, and many other fields are indispensable. But it forces you to think of scarcity, trade-offs, incentives, equilibria, and marginal effects.
