We also included a Q about grant review, something we’ve previously only explored anecdotally (. ~Half of respondents said they felt the lack of animal experiments in their grant proposal negatively influenced its evaluation (57%; 47 of 83 respondents).

Respondents reported complying with just one in four of these requests on average (24%)! . About a quarter of respondents even said they’ve used animal-based methods solely because they expected editor or reviewer requests for them (22%; 16 of 72 respondents).

Another COLAAB recommendation takes flight! 🕊️. On July 7, @NKleinstreuer announced @NIH will no longer exclude NAMs from NOFOs or seek animal-only proposals. These are key steps to curb #AnimalMethodsBias, as suggested in our 2024 workshop report:

This new policy is a strong step toward transparency, opening "the 'black box' of science" and enabling research on academic publishing and methodological biases. We hope more journals follow suit!. Read @Nature's editorial here:

As the article notes, "Scientists are often incentivized to use animals in their research" and "academic journals prefer to publish studies using animals." . This #AnimalMethodsBias slows adoption of cutting-edge technologies like organ-chips & computational modeling.

💡 #AnimalMethodsBias is in the news again in @rfobar's important piece on federal efforts to reduce animal experimentation. This systemic bias favors animal-based studies over translatable, human-based methods—and it's long overdue for scrutiny. 🔗
