1/5 HELLO. Some of you might be new here. Where've you been all this time? We're Caithness Broch Project, and we love brochs! What are brochs, though? They're 40ft, multi-floored Iron Age towers, thought to be houses, found only in #Scotland. AND WE WANT TO BUILD ONE!

He closed the fairy door, fixing to return the next day. Only when he did, he could see no door. And heard no sounds. Leaving the #Broch, the friend fixed to return next year, determined to rescue his friend... TO BE CONTINUED! *dun dun dun* (this is a very good joke btw)

Twirling, jigging and hi-yooing! One entered, while the other remained outside, cautious of what a dance with the fairies might entail. Peering inside, he called out to his friend: "Come out!" he cried. "...But I have not had a dance yet!" came the reply 📸-@MrEwanMorrison

The Reverend George Sutherland remarked that two men heard joyous sounds emanating from within BruanBroch - skirling bagpipes punctuated by cheering and the tapping of heels. They opened the door to a scene of frivolity and gaiety: greeted by the 'Sithean' - #fairy-folk!

💙 Blue skies at Bruan Broch 💙 A scene of serenity, but reputedly the site of a Sithean abduction! In 1937 a supernatural incident took place here, of two men were traipsing home after a night out... I mean we've all had a night when we've been away with the fairies...

The Iron Age broch of Dun an Sticer in North Uist. During the 16th century, the broch and surrounding area became the centre of a late medieval lordship. @KPW1453 info/image turned into a reconstruction mock-up Gif.

5) Brochs are complex, ingenious structures with a variety of fascinating features They are double walled, with a stairway running through them to the first floor Broch 'voids' may have allowed smoke to escape from hearths And as for the roofs - what do you think?

4) It's thought that these structures were dwellings - given the finds associated with them. You'll find all sorts of interesting things which point to lives being lived. 📸1 - Stone lamp from Clachtoll 📸2 - Spindle whorls from Glenelg 📸3 - Painted pebble from Keiss

3) The prevailing thought is "display architecture" - statements of cultural and social identity, and likely testament to personal ambition and evidence of economic power and reach. Some things never change...

2) Brochs are, esssentially, monumental drystone (no mortar or bonding agents!) structures. They were borne out of a pre-existing tradition of building rounded dwellings from stone - only now much larger. Why though?

4) All the while we've been working hard towards our #BigBrochBuild, the reconstruction of the first broch in over 2,000 years. We want to understand how our ancestors built them, and why. But also, an important and awesome tourist attraction for #Caithness!

3) We did our biggest project yet, £180,000 conservation of #OusdaleBroch! It was described as #Caithness's best broch, before part of it collapsed. We saved it, and made it much safer and easier to visit! Got a sign for in 'n' all.

2) Quickly about us: - All volunteers, we do not get paid to do this!! - Been on the go since 2013. - Started off small by making tourism leaflets, interp. panels, grass-cutting, broch exhibitions (inc. our #LegoBroch) and excavations! - Then in 2021...

4) But most of all, we really want Michael Palin to come up to #Caithness and say "Crikey, what a lovely idea" so we can break down in tears knowing that we're doing a good thing. Thank you for all your love and support in the meantime!
