The reason why Pablo Matera isn't booed on a rugby field is that he showed remorse for his actions and hasn't repeated his offensive remarks since. Folau has done neither of these things.
Folau has caused an enormous amount of hurt to huge numbers both across Australia and around the world. But if he apologised and took responsibility for his words & actions, I think some people would be amazed by how quickly that would be forgiven.
