My piece, the first in a 3 part series for

, looks at Teofilo Cubillas - imo the best South American footballer of the 1970s.
Part 1 looks at Cubillas' discovery as a teenager, breaking into his club 1st team + national team in the late 1960s.
Though Yves Bissouma would be a fantastic signing, it would mean FIVE

- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
- Nicolas Pépé
- Thomas Partey
- Mohamed Elneny (if not sold)
- Yves Bissouma (if bought)

Got to go through pain to receive pleasure. Losing Martinez, Torreria and Bellerin or Maitland-Niles is a blow yet if it means the Gunners get Partey and or Aouar it is worth the sacrifices.
Fulham spent £100m to prepare themselves for the 2018/19 Premier League only to have 3 managers in a season, have a player get arrested due to a training ground scrap and concede 81 league goals in a season - average of 2.1 per game.
West London clubs truly know how to wild out.
Varane, Saul and Sancho for Manchester United would definitely be how to bounce back from losing the Europa League final and contend for the Premier League this season.
Manchester United have leapfrogged Liverpool in the race for Saúl Ñíguez, per
@FApor_elmundo
.
Whilst negotiations continue to stall between Barça and Atléti for a Griezmann-Saúl swap, Jonathan Barnett, Saúl’s agent, is in advanced negotiations with United over a transfer.
Everton chairman Bill Kenwright looking shell-shocked after his side are knocked out by QPR on penalties in the Carabao Cup. Despite spending £500m+ in the last 5 seasons, Everton have yet to break into the top six or at least reach a domestic cup final.
Aston Villa are playing brilliantly. Dismantling Manchester United with ease. Pleased for Villa fans such as
@lmechegaray
who have been through the ringer this season.
Leicester City could end up getting Boubakary Soumaré, Ozan Kabak, Ryan Bertrand and Patson Daka for just over £50 million. Even by their standards, that’d be an incredible window.
Throw in a right winger and a contract renewal for Youri Tielemans…that takes it to a 10/10.
@RafaelH117
Reminds me of Aubameyang's move to Arsenal from Dortmund. Breakdown in relationship between club and manager - move to Arsenal gave him a chance to rejuvenate his career.
Breakdown in relationship between him and Arteta - move to Barcelona a chance to revitalise him.
@RafaelH117
Ten Haag in the exact same position Arteta was in December 2019. Will take 2-3 seasons to get to his end goal. Question is will United show the patience to EtH that Arsenal have showed to Arteta?
@Millar_Colin
Sky really don't want to acknowledge why the 2005 Ashes was different - because it was free to air and accessible to all.
Hence why the Ashes means a lot to Australia as I think this series is free to air and don't have to rely on one hour highlight shows that are compressive.
That is at least €100m+ worth of sales missed out on for Schalke by deciding not to sell when these players had 12 months left on their contract. Terrible mismanagement by the club.
Players that Schalke have lost on free transfers:
-Alexander Nübel ➡️ Bayern
-Leon Goretzka ➡️ Bayern
-Max Meyer ➡️ Crystal Palace
-Sead Kolašinac ➡️ Arsenal
-Joël Matip ➡️ Liverpool
-Christian Fuchs ➡️ Leicester City
To get Milenkovic for €15m + addons when Atletico Madrid bid €45m for him in 2018 is decent business by West Ham. Doesn't turn 24 until October and has a wealth of Serie A experience. Shrewd move by the Hammers.

@RafaelH117
All I will say is Arsenal got the better left back (and versatile) in Zinchenko for nearly half the price. That's outsmarting the market while Bohely is showing his inexperience in the footballing world by wilfully splurging on players in positions they already have players for.
Such terrible journalism from Salvador Sostres of
@abc_es
who compared the runs of Barcelona's Ansu Fati against Ferencvaros yesterday to black street vendors being chased by police.
The reason why Pablo Matera isn't booed on a rugby field is that he showed remorse for his actions and hasn't repeated his offensive remarks since. Folau has done neither of these things.
Folau has caused an enormous amount of hurt to huge numbers both across Australia and around the world. But if he apologised and took responsibility for his words & actions, I think some people would be amazed by how quickly that would be forgiven.
🚨 Arsenal complete £105m acquisition of Declan Rice from West Ham. Club-to-club agreement signed 5pm Friday. 24yo joins on 5+1yr contract & will train with

Agreed. The fact two of Portugal's big sporting papers are leading with it (who primarily lead with football) just shows how seismic this win is.
Portugal sensationally defeating Fiji 24-23 in the Rugby World Cup for their 1st ever WC victory is quite a seismic moment for Portugese rugby.

The fact Arteta gave him 37 appearances, started him repeatedly through August-December, is one of main reasons any goodwill earned from fans after winning the FA Cup has evaporated.
It's been four years coming, ever since Japan shot into everyone's hearts by beating South Africa in the boldest, bravest way possible. So, with just *days* to go, how can we expect Japan to perform in the 2019 Rugby World Cup?
@EduardoHagn
With Arsenal likely to get Champions League football next season, quality squad depth is required especially a specialist right back. So this would be a good long term move.
If Bournemouth can receive a bid of at least £18m for Aaron Ramsdale then Arsenal should want at least £25m-£30m if they decide to sell Emiliano Martinez.
The GK dilemma is so important. Yes, having 2 very good GKs is amazing but one will have to be on the bench. Also, if we decide to sell one, we could invest all of that money in an outfield position and add even more quality.
@martynziegler
The co-efficient plans smack of the ECA trying to placate big clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United unable to qualify for the CL by sporting means.
As a Arsenal fan, I want my team to qualify via merit, not through the backdoor
I've grown to love the multiple host cities but Baku is an awful venue; incredibly inaccessible to both sets of fans and sucks the life out of the atmosphere, huge burden for the players, taking part in an autocratic country that isn't even in Europe. UEFA corruption wins again.
@RafaelH117
Exactly. Winning a Champions League for clubs like Barcelona happen once or twice per decade yet going Invincible like Arsenal or Juventus happens once every century.
@ZachLowy
Failed to win a single trophy at Man Utd. That is unacceptable. Arteta has understandably gotten a lot of flak but at least he won a trophy in his first year of management.
@davidjaca
Can see Arteta employ inverted full backs on both flanks which would be very interesting to see in full flow.
Plus a specialist right back is needed for Arsenal in regards to depth. Would love Fresneda in N5.
July 2022 - Sebastien Haller diagnosed with testicular cancer shortly after joining Borussia Dortmund from Ajax.
Today - scores for Dortmund vs Augsburg to overtake Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga should they hold on.
Got to love football.
Each of those five clubs can name an exciting talent produced by their academies in the last 4 years.
PSG - Jonathan Ikoné
Rennes - Eduardo Camavinga
Lyon - Houssem Aouar
St Etienne - William Saliba
Monaco - Kylian Mbappé
Sochaux also produced Ibrahima Konaté of RB Leipzig.
The dark aspect of German fan culture. Manuel Neuer in 2011, when it was likely he was headed to Bayern from Schalke, was slapped by a fan during their

celebrations. Leon Goretzka was savaged by Schalke fans when he moved to Bayern. Their fans are not forgiving.
Alexander Nübel's family faced death threats from Schalke fans after the German goalkeeper announced that he would join Bayern Munich on a free this summer, per Bild.
His parents were threatened at their workplaces in Paderborn, which is 90 minutes away from Schalke's grounds.

If Pablo Lemoine is not nominated for Coach Of The Year or one of Fernandez's tries isn't nominated as Try Of The Year then World Rugby will have surpassed themselves.
What a historic achievement.
Chelsea paying £97.4m for Lukaku sounds a lot but their summer outgoings key to how they are being clever.
Five academy graduates - £10m.
Marc Guehi - £21m.
Fikayo Tomori - £26.2m.
Victor Moses - £4.5m.
Olivier Giroud - £900k.
Overall - £62.6m.
Net spend with Lukaku - £34.8m.

Never forget. The fact Getafe are acting as if they've signed the 2nd coming of Romario speaks volumes.
The fact Getafe's sporting director (knowingly?) wrongly said a judge acquitted Greenwood is smokescreen for a Spanish audience unaware of the full facts of the case.
@cdavison_afc
A really excellent creative player. But if I'm Norwich I would be not entertaining ANY offers until the summer. Reaching the Premier League is all important for Norwich and selling Buendia could jeopardise it.
The only team that will end up feeling worse than South Korea about this first half is Uruguay.
Suárez, Valverde, Darwin, Bentancur, Cavani, Pellistri…and yet, zero goals and one shot on target against South Korea.

O'Hara is nothing more than a click bait media personality designed to enrage rival fans with his ludicrous takes.
If he knew his football outside the Premier League then he would have known that Saliba has made the French squad back to back under Deschamps. No mean feat.
