ER Physician in #YYZ. Passionate about making a difference in the #cdnhealth system through QI/PS/Simulation | @actioncanada fellow 2018-2019 | views my own

It’s tempting to propose simple fixes to #edwaittimes, but throwing attn and resources at things that we know don’t really work just makes things worse, and takes time/$ away from dvlping real, evidence-based solutions ED Crowding kills. Not volume. @CAEP_Docs
1/ Why opening more Urgent Care Centres doesn’t fix ER wait times 🧵👇 They sound like a smart solution to divert “non-emergency” visits—but the evidence and experience say otherwise. #EmergencyMedicine #cdnhealth #CAEP

1 in 13 Canadians going to ER get FED UP with the wait time and LEAVE before being seen …even though many have URGENT problems Their risk of hospitalization & death is 14% higher over the next week. https://t.co/FBdgbI560x

As someone who has practiced Emergency medicine for nearly 20 years I will weigh in. Urgent care centres and offloading vaccinations and preventable care from FD is not to solution to ED overcrowding and wait times. Lower acuity patients aren’t the issue. 1/

I don’t normally post about politics… but I think it’s a bit rich for Trump to blame us for the fentanyl epidemic, when the blame can be laid solely at the feet of the 100% American drug company that developed Oxycontin, which has now been sued into bankruptcy #buycanada

Absolutely devastating to hear about the violence our Halifax colleagues experienced. This type of violence should be a ‘never-event’ - we need, and deserve, better.
Our thoughts are with our colleagues at the QEII in Halifax. Violence has no place in the Emergency Department. Read CAEP’s position statement on violence in the ED and the urgent need for action: https://t.co/3khh5OiANH

glad to write an article for the @globeandmail about hospital crowding/wait times and how the public can show up for ERs instead of in them. one day, we won't need the rooms, and the medicine will come to us. until then, here are some things you can do: https://t.co/fbmRNVKMrd

In an overburdened health care system, it’s important to be armed with essential information for navigating it

So much respect for the aorta Sneaky bas****
I hate aortic dissections 1/ A middle aged patient presents with a week of severe abdominal pain and constipation. Has not had a bowel movement in several days. No fever or history of similar pain. HR 110, BP 168/110 otherwise vs wnl. history of cholecystectomy and c-section.

Thanks @globeandmail for the quote today. A reminder that this silly obsession with diverting a relatively small number of minor cases will no nothing to solve the challenges of Canada's crisis of ED overcrowding. @CAEP_Docs @alandrummond2

This is beyond ridiculous, and just plain wrong. Sometimes a GP can do everything right and the pt STILL needs admission… Or, sometimes they pick up on something and by sending that pt to the ED, save their lives Not #evidencebasedpolicy at all. #ONHealth

It doesn’t always work, but when it does #TTC is pretty great Beaches to Bathurst and Dundas in little over 30 min, vs 25 min drive! @TTChelps #takethettc #publicinfrastructure #urbanplanning

Some shifts I feel like an air traffic controller in a Monty Python skit. The planes arrive unannounced and out of fuel, the pilots are drunk and screaming at each other, none of the terminals are open for business, and the runways are all occupied by boarded inpatients...

Physicians and HCWs across Canada should be paying attn to the moves being made in AB. Never assume it can’t or won’t happen in our jurisdictions, as evidence based decisions get pushed aside in public outcry over our bruised and battered #cdnhealth system
“If they can’t meet the terms that we want them to, we can do an RFP,” Smith went on in her 2021 speech. “And then the Alberta Health Insurance can give a different contract to a different group of doctors.”

So sad to see this happen to what was at one time arguably the best provincial healthcare system in the country #AHS
It takes years of great decisions to build a world class health system. It takes a handful of bad decisions to burn it to the ground. Hope Canadians pay attention. It won’t take too long for healthcare to slide from good->tolerable tolerable->bad and bad->desolate

After the release of our virtual care statement we met with 3 provincial governments and a representative from the @markhollandlib 's office to discuss how CAEP can assist in thoughtful and successful planning. We look forward to meeting with Manitoba in September!
