We are in the middle of a massive healthcare crisis in Canada. Many Physicians, like Past President Kirsten Johnson, are willing to travel to parts of the country that are in such desperate need of healthcare but licensing is a barrier. 1/
🧵Today was a good day for emergency medicine in Canada. We once again have returned home hopeful. CAEP reps, on behalf of our members and their patients, effectively conveyed the challenges confronting emergency departments across the nation to the Ministers of Health. /1
Simply put- this is not good. " New data obtained by CTV News shows that the number of Canadians leaving hospital emergency rooms without being seen is even higher than we initially reported earlier this month." Thank you
@Avis_Favaro
for continuing to cover ED dysfunction.
New-Over 1.3 million Canadians left ER without being seen by a doctor April 2022-March 2023. This is a 34% increase in patients abandoning the wait for care over a year ago.

: Alan Drummond has been an urgent-care doctor for nearly 40 years. Like many ERs across Canada, his department has never been closer to collapse.
"According to the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians, the root cause of hospital overcrowding is not inappropriate use of hospital services but rather the inability to transfer patients to other hospital departments for care in a timely manner."
@alandrummond2
Say it louder for all the leaders in the back, middle or front.
Non-urgent patients are not the driver of long wait times in the ER.
It’s a lack of staffed inpatient beds that cause boarding of patients in the ER for hours to days.

We need your feedback! Emergency Medicine in Canada is failing its patients, its community & the caregivers within the system. We know this. We also know that the root causes of our problems extend beyond our departments. For us to survive our entire ecosystem must change. 1/3
