America is standing on the edge of a cliff looking down into an abyss. Catholic. Classical music. Eternal optimist.

We don’t need more composers trained in the arcane, modernist techniques favored in academic graduate composition departments. We need more composers who aren’t afraid or discouraged to embrace the popular element and create music of cultural relevance.

At some point we should probably start caring about AI data centers consuming all of our energy and water

I am biased here, but I also really like the choices in orchestration

It’s eye opening. That ceiling lamp is giving off no infrared light at all.

I put an infrared filter over my phone and took this photo. You can see the natural infrared light coming through the windows. But look at that awful kitchen LED light. Absolutely no infrared. I’ve hated it since we moved in and this explains why. These lights are soul-sucking.

Before I was Catholic, I struggled with the absence of large-scale miracles in modern history. I thought to myself, "It's odd that the Jews and earliest Christians witnessed powerful public miracles, but we today only see healings." Once I reverted, I no longer had to question

And here is a shot of outside on an overcast day. You can see the effect of the rock bed in our yard and concrete in the street - no infrared reflection. But the trees and grass reflect plenty. This gives the phrase “concrete jungle” even more meaning.

For reference, this is a traditional incandescent bulb. You can see it gives off at least some infrared. Compare that to the soulless LED kitchen overhead. It drives me batty.

I saw them perform this in 2009 in Chicago under Simon Rattle. I’ll never forget it. What an education. Real chamber music.

Some say AI is being trained by what is already digital and easily available, like the cesspools of Reddit and Wikipedia. So much knowledge will be lost, just like that box of VHS tapes you threw in the dumpster a few months ago. This is what is at stake:

Another great article by Jenn at RedState. I witnessed this as a kid in Yosemite. They still had controlled burns, lived there for 4 years and we did not have one fire that was not quickly put out. When Sierra Club sued to leave the forest in a natural state. About 30 years later

It’s fun to glance around the audience right before this moment. Stravinsky’s Firebird has a moment like this too. Like fart jokes, it never gets old.
The explosive power of Verdi’s Dies Irae from Messa da Requiem, conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini with the Philharmonia Orchestra at Royal Festival Hall, April 26, 1964 – a pinnacle of emotion and drama.✨ #Verdi #Orchestra

Libs are manufacturing negative Kennedy Center stories because they want Trump to fail so badly, it's all they care about. Meanwhile Trump's new CEO is raising money, reaching right wingers the previous regime hated, and giving musicians extra comp tickets! The horror!
The Kennedy Center raised almost 3x as much money as last year at its opening gala and brought in scores of first-time donors, yet NPR still tries to make this a bad thing because libs have to go to other venues to watch their drag shows and degenerate concerts. Boo hoo. Begone.

Musicology has long mostly leaned left. But I remember when older scholars were nonetheless uncomfortable with AMS becoming too activist. Young scholars today are increasingly being trained by those reared on “New Musicology.” Look that term up.
@musicandroots How did this happen to musicology? It is full of rot.

I don’t blame you. If I really needed to sleep, I would also put on some Bruckner. (unpopular opinion, not sorry)
#NowSpinning Karajan’s 1970s DG Bruckner 7. I am not sleepy, so I thought I’d put my earphones on and just take it in. I am NOT regretting my choice right now. The orchestra sounds majestic.

There is going to be a reckoning with these kids on electric scooters going 20mph. They don't wear helmets and don’t follow traffic laws. Tragedy is waiting in the wings.
