There’s a difference between quitting and removing yourself from a situation that no longer serves you.

Taking a break because of your mental health should be just as accepted as taking a break because of a physical injury. 💜

Question: In your opinion, what's one thing that needs to be urgently normalized in academia? P.S. More than one is fine too. List as many things as you'd like :) #AcademicChatter #AcademicMentalHealth @AcademicChatter @OpenAcademics

You know that famous piece of advice you hear everywhere: ‘don’t give up’? Well sometimes it should be: do give up for the sake of your wellbeing. Nothing is worth your health. No medal, no PhD, no grant, no promotion. Nothing! Fantastic that top athletes are role-modelling this.

Let's raise awareness that people can and do abuse their power in academia and that it can negatively impact a student's life. WE NEED TO PROTECT OUR GRAD STUDENTS.

Quitting a lab should be as acceptable as quitting a company/job. Quitting doesn’t correlate with one’s intellect or caliber. Stop judging and normalize giving second chances to people in academia. #phdchat #phdvoice @OpenAcademics @AcademicChatter #academia

"Leaving academia is not easy...we are surrounded by other academics and it is easy to get swamped in feeling that if everyone around you succeeds in academia, you should succeed as well." - @Doctor_PMS https://t.co/K0lfnz1un5 #AcademicChatter #AcademicMentalHealth #AltAc

My postdoc PI was extremely disappointed and he told me, "You know that if you leave academia, there's no coming back." After 3 years, I think he was totally correct, but for totally different...

Self-care can mean different things for different people. How much time you spend on self-care and what kind of activities it involves should be based on what works best for you! 🤗 Which kind of self-care will you focus on this weekend? #AcademicChatter #AcademicMentalHealth

After a long break, we are back with a new blog post: The story of me quitting my PhD. It is a very personal story about the process I went through while deciding whether or not to leave my PhD position. https://t.co/2EoLrsQY06 #AcademicTwitter #phdlife #phdchat #talesofphds

I have been involved in several conversations about "academic success" lately - what must be done, what must be sacrificed, etc. I wish we were talking more about personal definitions of success. We all have different dreams, and they all can be pursued through different means.

There is never a 'perfect' moment to take time off. Theres always another project, another paper, another meeting If you wait for the perfect moment, you will be waiting an awfully long time Take time off as, & when, you need it! @AcademicChatter #AcademicMentalHealth

Knowing a lot about a research area and having the skills to be a great leader are not the same thing. Academia would be so much healthier if we stopped conflating these things.
