This Friday is marked as the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation in our country. It’s also known as Orange Shirt Day, a tragic reminder that
#EveryChildMatters
. But do we as Canadians truly understand the horrific legacy of trauma inflicted by the Residential School system?
Here’s that Breaking News I promised you. Broken blender thrown in for good measure. Very excited for the arrival of Bobby Margarita. Available now in AB, NS in Jan/22 and ON/SK April/22. Enjoy:
Finally, on Lias Andersson tossing his medal into the crowd, I would say only this: 1. It’s an emotional game; 2. They’re just kids, living and learning; 3. Lias is a fantastic kid and a great player; 4. He could play on my team, if I had one, any time:
Getting a little dusty in here. 😢 Carey’s sensitivity and support is so genuine but so is Anderson’s sense of loss. I was in my 30s when I lost my mom, can’t imagine how hard it is for kids to have to go through it. This is such a touching moment.
This is everything — this young fan, Anderson, met his idol
@CP0031
, after his mother passed away due to cancer. She had promised him that she would do everything in her power to help the two meet and it happened. This right here is hockey.

2019? Seriously, this is disgusting on every level but especially because the report suggests it may have been more the rule than the exception in the arena. The whole affair is sickening.
Ryan Reaves’ hit on Tom Wilson last night, which resulted in a major penalty/game misconduct for interference and also knocked Wilson out of the game with injury, will not result in any supplementary discipline by the NHL.
@CanadiensMTL
Final line of statement - “we are committed to raising awareness among our players about the repercussions of their actions on the lives of others” - will be met with scorn/disbelief because, from a hockey perspective, Mailloux faced no real repercussions. He’s a 1st rounder.
Hard to believe it was 40 years ago today Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope. I’ve always thought of Terry Fox as The Greatest Canadian ever, a seemingly ordinary young man who did such extraordinary things so courageously and inspired 🇨🇦’s sense of community and sacrifice.
That three-goal, five-point effort by Sean Couturier today was one for the ages. Fact he did it on an MCL injury that would normally keep him out four weeks, absolutely incredible. PHI loss shouldn’t diminish magnitude of the accomplishment. Add it to Stanley Cup playoff lore.
@CanadiensMTL
The only real “victim” in this situation is the teenage woman who actually experienced real repercussions, through no fault of her own. I’m not sure many in hockey thought Mailloux would never be drafted but not sure many figured it would be tonight.
Adios. Thx for following along today and all year. A return to semi-retirement beckons. See you in September sometime for 2022 pre-season NHL draft rankings. Until then…
#BobbyMargarita
out. All day; every day. Take care. 🙏
Flu shot* ✅
Shingles shot** ✅
Wear a mask*** 😷 ✅
* My first one ever.
** Shingles is no joke, especially for us semi-retired seniors. If you want more info on it, here you go:
*** A mask is it not a political statement, but it is an IQ test.
Imagine my surprise when I started making calls today and heard Jack Eichel trade rumours, including unverified chatter he may have at some point recently requested a trade out of BUF and that NYR were amongst interested teams. This, of course, required further investigation.
This is awesome. So happy for Bobby Ryan, who has always been one of the really nice guys in the NHL. Great for Sens’ fan to make it even more special for him.
With Edmonton and Toronto being chosen as the two NHL Hub cities, the question most often asked now is, which of the two will play host to the Stanley Cup final and Conference finals?
The answer, apparently, is Edmonton.
Vacation is almost over. Back to work next week, although I’m checking the fine print in my contract. Still hoping to see a clause where I don’t have to start work until after Mitch Marner and all the other RFAs have already signed. Not liking my chances.
Auston Matthews year by year breakdown:
Year 1: $15.2M SB, $700K salary.
Year 2: $15.2M SB, $700K salary.
Year 3: $9.7M SB, $750K salary.
Year 4: $7.2M SB, $750K salary.
Year 5: $7.2M SB, $750K salary.
That’s $54.5M in SB, $3.65M in salary.
I’m told Taylor Hall has not been dealt at this point, however, there is some traction in trade talks the Devils are having with teams and so the risk is not worth playing him play at the moment. Stay tuned.
My day is complete now at
@NHL
Awards because I got to meet this great young man, Anderson Whitehead. Says he’s a big fan of
@TSN_Sports
but we are even bigger fans of him. 👍
Sadly, it’s my understanding that staff at The Hockey News has been laid off. I have a lot of friends there so thinking of them and hoping for the best for them.
To Eric and the entire Hawerchuk family, we are all so sorry for your loss. I will tell you what you already know —Dale is a treasured member of the hockey community and we will all miss him greatly. Take care and our thoughts are with you all. 🙏
After an incredibly brave and difficult battle with cancer, our dad has passed away. My family is so proud of him and the way he fought.
#HawerchukStrong
Regardless of how you feel about the teams in tonight’s draft lottery, it should be dramatic — and quick. No turning over of cards or a countdown. Eight ping pong balls with team logos. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. Machine spits out one live. Winner winner, chicken dinner.
Here’s some great news. Brayden Camrud of the
@HumboldtBroncos
has accepted a scholarship offer from
@UAASeawolves
. Brayden will begin his
@NCAAIceHockey
career in the fall. Congrats to Brayden. An exciting offensive player and a great young man. 👍 💚💛
Draft related update: Alexis Lafreniere will not be reporting to Rimouski’s training camp this fall and will not be going to Europe to play. He’s training in Boisbriand, plans to be drafted and report to his NHL team in November and play 20-21 in the NHL.
There’s Canadian Thanksgiving and U.S. Thanksgiving and then there’s my Thanksgiving — Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final — when I’m thankful for the career I’ve had, the job I have and the honour of attending my 36th Final. Never gets old even tho I do. Enjoy the game(s). 🇨🇦🏒🥅🇺🇸
Just about to take off from Saskatoon to Toronto, so my guess is the Karlsson trade is most likely to happen in that precise window after losing cell service but before reaching wifi altitude. 😂
@kuklaskorner
I thought about setting up my own fake account and tweeting out legit news on fake account BEFORE my actual account, just to mess with people.
Charlie McAvoy has agreed to terms with BOS. Three-year deal, $4.9M AAV. Very similar to Zach Werenski’s three-year, $5M AAV deal with CBJ. McAvoy could make up the $300K difference because his Year 3 salary, and Qualifying Offer base, is $7.3M, $300K more than Werenski’s.
@PierreVLeBrun
Disagree, mon ami. CAR and CBJ earned the 7/8 seeds by winning high-pressure games down stretch that MTL didn’t. Why should MTL, and a team that wasn’t close (FLA), get a one-game gift chance. A team like CBJ possibly losing its hard-earned spot on a one game gimmick...
Barring any last-minute complications, and we have seen some of those (Vancouver and Las Vegas), the two NHL Hub cities will be Edmonton and Toronto. 🇨🇦
While many are trying to connect the potential trade dots on TOR GM Kyle Dubas being at last night’s NYR-CGY game at MSG, which I suppose is possible, it’s worth noting two things: 1. William Nylander’s agent Lewis Gross lives in Manhattan. 2. Dubas likes to go to hockey games.
Just about to take off from Saskatoon to Toronto, so my guess is the Karlsson trade is most likely to happen in that precise window after losing cell service but before reaching wifi altitude. 😂
I can’t think of many, or maybe even any, hockey players who so thoroughly conducted themselves, on and off the ice, in such a first-class manner every step of the way. From start to finish:
"We started the year with the mindset that a decision would be made in the postseason. But it became clear, after discussions with our families throughout the year, that this will be our last season..."
TOR, more or less, has an agreement in place with Kasperi Kapanen on an extension. Not expected to be formalized until TOR cap (Marner) situation clarified. It will be a 3 year deal with an AAV in the $3.2M to $3.4M range.
Mark Borowiecki broke up a robbery attempt in Gastown yesterday. Was able to get someone’s backpack returned by knocking down a person on a bicycle who had taken a bag.

When I took 15-year-old

to

prospect camp, I quickly realized the guy with the giant ‘fro had a special something that jumps out at you. Here we are, all these years later, and
@BizNasty2point0
is a mogul, a true superstar businessman/influencer.
My colleague
@odognine2
has had his computer bag go missing in downtown Vancouver. There’s one item in the bag — his gold medal from the 1995 WJC — that he would like to get back. If anyone should come across it in their travels, its return would greatly appreciated. Thx.
Jonathan Marchessault and VGK closing in on contract extension for the pending UFA who is currently making $750K. When it’s done, it’s expected to be 6 years with an AAV of $5M or thereabouts. He’s earned it. Quite a story in Vegas, where great stories abound this season.
While we ponder what may or may not happen between Zack Kassian and Matthew Tkachuk in the EDM-CGY game tonight, Kassian has reason to be happy. The pending UFA F has a new contract extension — AAV of $3.2M — with the Oilers.
