Very happy that our letter to the FAO challenging their errors downplaying the climate benefits of dietary change has been covered in The Guardian. https://t.co/5pSafvhhGR

“The complex web of alliances means anyone questioning the overall strategy is viewed as disloyal, if not treacherous”
If the unholy alliance of farm bodies and industry is successful in its lobbying, the price will be our rivers and lakes https://t.co/rZax5GwFAW

Salient investigative journalism here by @DeSmog “shedding light on the links between key actors will provide a basis from which to develop new research questions, and conversations, about how to advance democratic debate and processes to tackle the climate crisis in Ireland”

You can hear the exasperation in this interview with hearing the same talking points from the meat/dairy industry that have been rolled out for years. Even farm orgs at EU level have now accepted change must happen. https://t.co/Yjvjd5T3bT

Anyone else find the reification of "culture" in concepts like "culturally-appropriate diet" really problematic? It's one thing to acknowledge culturally-entrenched eating habits as social facts & opportunities/barriers to policy; it's another to treat them as ahistorical facts.

Did I really just hear the head of the @CCACIreland say that we need to eat less sugar to reduce emissions from ag? Did she mean meat and dairy but the word that came out was sugar?? https://t.co/2cbYn3KD5p

Here is a peer reviewed article that provides a clearer picture in terms of consumption related GHGe in Ireland:

Great to see the @CCACIreland Agriculture and LULUCF review highlight the need to address public misconceptions about diet-related emissions. But disappointed to see a Figure used that adds to these misconceptions!

Expanding Irish dairy production is often justified, despite local and climate pollution, because of its importance for nutrition in developing countries. But NGOs are sounding the alarm about the main dairy export to Africa - Fat Filled Milk Powder.. 1/

How many times has the National Dairy Council been found by the Advertising Standards Authority to be making unsubstantiated green claims? I suppose they’re reduced to this now.

President Higgins spoke at length, saying "our food production system is broken". His speech linked growing global hunger to conflict and militarism - including in Gaza - the climate crisis, and "increasing production through intensive industrialized methods".

It was a huge honour to meet @PresidentIRL Michael D. Higgins today, with Director General of @FAO, QU Dongyu. Our President was awarded the FAO Agricola Medal for his extraordinary services to global food security.

This makes me sick to my stomach every time I see it. Why is this not major, major news in Ireland? A high chance of abrupt cooling in Ireland within the next two decades.
Just attending a 3-day workshop on the danger of abrupt ocean circulation changes. Discussions are quite worrying. E.g. in 35 to 45 % of high quality models, convection in the open North Atlantic collapses in the 2030s due to #globalheating. -> Major climate disruption. ☹️

My piece in today’s @IrishTimes on the Government’s hot school meals scheme. Embedding industrial food and packaging waste in our schools. A wasted opportunity for co-benefits around food equality, child health, food education, and local food sourcing
irishtimes.com
While aimed at child health and rolled out impressively fast, school food merits better use of public money by the Government

Vegetables are losing their nutrients. “My concerns are policymakers choosing to invest in biofortification instead of supporting more enduring smallholder models of farming that could be more efficient and resilient than large-scale systems”
theguardian.com
A process called biofortification puts nutrients directly into seeds and could reduce global hunger, but it’s not a magic bullet
