Extremely important point from @CattsHugh at #dyslexiacon2024: The biggest piece missing from the IDA 2002 definition of dyslexia was the psychosocial problems associated with struggling to learn to read.

But the knowledge required to comprehend varies by text. (3) have your child’s oral language skills been measured? It’s possible #devlangdis is at play. (I should’ve mentioned her decoding abilities were strong). 3/End.

Trips to museums, zoo, etc and sort of blamed herself for her daughter’s difficulty. My first response (1) her reading comprehension difficulties are NOT your fault. My questions- (2) what does a “background knowledge” test measure? Yes prior knowledge impacts comprehension 2/n.

Recently had a mom who is also an educator reach out to me very concerned about her child. Her child is having reading comprehension difficulties and scored low on a school assessment of “background knowledge.” Mom was concerned that she hadn’t given her daughter enough 1/n.

I want to start a series of posts on knowledge-building. It has become a term that is used quite glibly in conference presentations for teachers- and it is often used inappropriately. So let’s start with a definition: What is knowledge-building?.

Agree 1000%. It’s not parents’ job to teach reading. That’s what school is for.

"Lazy parent problem"? .I know a guy working 3 jobs, wife works 2. His well-behaved always at school by 7:45, clean, fed, rested, w/ bagged lunch. Kid's always 'Yes sir. No sir'. So, he's lazy if he doesn't teach them to read?.Nothing boils my blood > "lazy parents" label.
